Not sure how RM will recoup that sort of money with buying Bale,he doesn't have the appeal of the likes of Ronaldo worldwide.Plus he's Welsh, not going to be seen in a World Cup or Euro Championships any time soon.

Stupid amount of money for someone who will take a fair while to recoup the fee.

Or am I missing something?

He's very good at football and Madrid are never afraid to pay in excess of market value to secure the best available talent.

I'm not sure whether that means you're missing something.

I'm not talking about his talent,I'm talking the fee.Yes they aren't afraid to spend big,but this is a ridiculous amount of money.

When they've spend big (really big) they've been able to recoup that money. Not sure Bale falls into that category.

I was in the camp of bale not being a huge star and how will you recoup the money from shirt sales that you would with a ronaldo or a neymar or a kaka transfer but then i thought the cache of being the most expensive footballer in the world when it comes to shirt sales etc must carry some weight with it and maybe that coupled with his profile potentially rising beyond measure at madrid means that while it wont be the instant hit that you got with a ronaldo or a neymar it probably still is viable over time.

I never understood the "shirt sales" argument. Unless the new player suddenly generates new fans, surely shirt sales, specifically for the new player, are simply going to be purchases that a fan would have made anyway, with an existing player's name printed on the back. That being the case, a player like Bale, generating £100m in shirt sales over a two year period, loses the club £100m or so in shirt sales for other players give or take an accepted limited number of genuinely additional sales.

Some people don't understand the importance of having this kind of players.
This is what make Real Madrid the most popular team in the world and being the most popular team in the world means making more money.

Kids grew up watching Zidane and became Madrid fans, same with Ronaldo. This is something that you can't buy with money.

PS. Zidane and Cristiano Ronaldo were bargains.

BOOM !

If Real sold Ronaldo tomorrow, they'd probably make their £80m back, so he would've effectively cost them nothing in transfer fees (well, I guess inflation). Bale is 23, which means that they could theoretically get 5 years out of him and still sell him for a record fee.

But yeah, like anything you definitely get diminishing returns the better the players get. The difference in price between the best player and the 5th best player in any position is nowhere near a reflection on their abilities. In fact, quite a few teams have been successful with players that were deemed surplus to requirements at Real Madrid (Barcelona, Bayern and Inter to name 3) because they absolutely must have the best player in every (attacking) position.

It's not only shirt sales. Madrid always keep a high percentage of their players commercial rights and obviously the player make more money because of it(the Real Madrid brand).
It's a good deal for both parties.
