I am not gonna shy away from the fact that I didn't think he was up to it last season, and as he himself has admitted, he needed to prove himself.

Well he has, and I LOVE the fact that he has proved me, and a lot of others wrong.

This lad will only get better imo. With more support it's in no way ridiculous to suggest that he could become the equal of any attacking midfielder in this league. It took Gerrard and Lampard until their mid twenties to start becoming the influence that they are on their teams. And that was playing in teams that hammer the rest most weeks.

And i don't think either of them has as much pure, natural, on the ball ability. Possibly more powerful or in possession of a better shot or a more imposing style of play. That can be developed though. The sort of technique Ireland has is very difficult to coach into a player.

I think we'll see more from him this season. I await reports of weight-training and wind-sprinting up and around the Peak District.
