Pep wanted Sanchez, Maguire etc. Our manager is one of the greatest of all time but he's not infallible. For a guy who is barely going to feature this is too much. For a similar price we can bring in someone like de Jong, and before anyone retorts with the "he's not a DM," he can play DM at an exceptionally high level. As well as a number of different midfield positions.

I'll back the club, but I think this is a mistake.

Would tend to agree with that mate, it’s obvious the club are backing peps number one choice and I’m all for it. The fee might end up at £55m ish but not straight out and if we end up at the full fee then he would have been a huge success.

Fair comment. I’d say Sanchez would have probably done very well if he’d come to us, not so much Maguire, although his faults wouldn’t have been shown up as much.

With Phillips, we’re probably looking for a very specific type of player who does what he does very well - breaks up play and passes the ball to feet for the better players do the damage - more Jorginho than de Jong.

Doubt the difference would be anything more than negligible for City, whereas Haaland is apparently wanting to build a brand around 9.

Tbh, I think people are reading more into the number of his shirt as a kid than necessary.

But Maguire and Sanchez under pep more than likely would have been better than the versions that played for the rags? Maguire at Leicester was an extremely good player and peps number one choice at that time for CB? Hence him having a paddy and not signing anyone else? Sanchez was highly wanted on this forum when it was close and I personally think he would have been brilliant under pep and the players and system we have?

Oh I agree mate, I think he’s going to be 9 but it just opened it up to a conversation that maybe he was going to take his dads number?
