It's Quiet 17 - Glory Thread

I still don't really get it with Rice. I know there are certain intangibles like his leadership but I just don't see any reason why he'd be bought for anything over £50m, other than the Grealish scenario of him being worth more to the selling club than anyone else.

He's not really exceptional on the offensive end where it would justify him playing the same box to box role that he does for West Ham and he lacks the passing range of someone like Rodri, which means if he was to play in a strictly holding role then he'd be there for nothing other than rotation.

What am I missing with him?

didn't know people here felt so strongly about it. seemed good whenever I watched him

I'm sure he has, but just don't think we have the money to do both deals on top of Haaland over the next 12 months.

Pep is a fan of Rice, which I know Estiarte has also confirmed to people, but he likes a lot of players, and we can't get them all.

For me, Rice would be brilliant.
I like Rice and he would indeed be brilliant, but genuinely not sure he fits (or that there’s a space for him, rather). I wouldn’t swap Rodders for anyone.

It’s feasible to switch to 4-2-3-1 if we got Rice as he’s more box to box. Bear in mind we will be changing our style assuming we get Erling anyway and could easily have Kev in behind him.

I did consider this. In a triangle of Rodri - Rice - (Grealish Foden KDB) we wouldn’t be surrendering any midfield control, but with a shape more suited to feeding a true #9.

Still, I’m not sure we bite at a £120m+ Rice on top of a Haaland deal worth upwards of £200m.

Edit: I also think we’d lose a lot by not having Kev deeper for his outrageous abilities in transition. The alternative would be Kev plus Rodri / Rice as the three options for two DM slots, then Jack / Phil at #10 in behind the striker.

Feasible but I think we'll still play 433 with one DM much the same as we did with Aguero.
