It's Quiet 17 - Glory Thread

KDB aside, our best and most effective players this season … cancelo, rodri, mahrez
All struggled at first. Its a well trodden path
Ultimately, the jury's still out on Grealish. Those writing him off already are simply displaying their ignorance. As Doris rightly states above, a number of players in recent years took time to bed in before becoming superstars for us (I'd add Toure and Silva to that list). Yes, you can argue that, as someone used to the rigours of the EPL, Grealish should have hit the ground running but, equally, we currently have a surfeit of players with a similar skillset all of whom are competing for the same role. Arguably, it may be time to move on Mahrez and/or Sterling at which point Grealish will, hopefully, be able to flourish in the role of creator a la David Silva. I may be proved completely wrong in the fullness of time. However, let's not join the dissenters in the gutter press by consigning one of our own to the bin before he's had the opportunity to prove himself.

Can't believe this is being done again. The amount of players we have signed (even before Pep) that haven't 'hit the ground running' but have gone on to be stars of the team and fans can't show patience.
This time next season, he will be playing centrally, after learning our style out on the wing. Pep obviously didn't even think it was a gamble - happy to go with him on this one.

The accent though.....
I'm not questioning that some players have started slow.

What I am questioning, and no one else seems to be able to answer, is how slow is *too slow*? Both by the numbers and the eye test, and for me this is unquestionable, jack's season has been far far worse than any of the ones your mentioned's first season. Mahrez was frustrating, rodri was a bit lost, cancelo seemed unneeded, but they all provided far better output and performances than what jack has done this season. They also (bar Mahrez) all came at a much younger age. This is the point of the debate - has jack been too poor to just excuse it away as first season growing pains? For the price we paid for him, I'd say absolutely.

At risk of making this the grealish thread which needs to be stopped…

Price has nothing to do with it. Same as anyone making comments on how much wages someone earns. Its irrelevant. Change requires transition. The time taken depends on the persons circumstances. Some adapt well, others take longer.

Grealish has moved from a club hes been at for 20 years. Its all hes known since he was 6 years old and frankly he probably doesnt remember a time he wasnt going into villas academy or training ground every week. Hes been schooled in playing a specific way with specific coaches. Its no surprise he may be taking slightly longer.

Mahrez was absolutely thrashed for his performances in his first season. Came back despite plenty of abuse from city fans and scored an important goal in the final game against brighton. Grealish has plenty of time to make a mark on this season. If he doesn’t, hes still contributed to the squad who have again had a brilliant season.

Why people feel the need to scapegoat a player is beyond me. Unfortunately for Jack he’s flavour of the month amongst some on here. See also Gundogan, Sterling, Mahrez …

No doubt when he does inevitably have more influence and output next season people like yourself will just move onto someone else

That we have history of easing players into the team in their 1st year, does not mean we should accept it as standard.
Jack has come from another Prem team, playing in approximately the same area of the pitch.
There will definitely be adjustments to be made to fit the style by Jack, and the season is nearly now done, so time is running out. He must begin to show more hunger, guile, adaptability and courage to become a mainstay in this team.
I truly hope he becomes a rock in our team. He has great talent, but as the chap before said, he is not 21... he's 26, and he is now entering his golden period, in a team that needs strong characters with fortitude.
Next season the pressure will increase, he must accept that, and so should the fans.

Well reading all this, we cannot really expect Haaland to come in and score goals. he really will need 12 months at least before he can be trusted with scoring goals. getting used to PL, to the way we play, we are lucky if he score 5 goals next season.

Haaland will score goals but he will struggle adapting to some parts of our game. If he struggles to score we should be patient!

No their not, they have been watching us play and need to know why we paid more for Grealish than the dippers did for Jota and Diaz combined.
Why do we have a problem understanding the concept of ageing.
KDB, Gundy and Walker all in their 30's.
Dinho gone.
No left back and no attempt since Mendy to even buy one.
The dippers are on our tail, but shouldn't be if we didn't keep playing our key players into the ground and actually bought players we needed.
£100 million for Grealish, let that figure sink in.

Price has a lot to do with it if better players are bought elsewhere for a lot less.

Grealish can only dream of being half a good a player as David Silva is even now at his age!

Im not saying he will be a failure but he wont reach the level of Dvid Silva...nowhere near...not many even in the professional world do
