I'm in the camp that playing 30/35 games a season is 'sellable ' to players.
Is it just the principle that YOU have to start every game even if there was 100 games a season (its coming)?
'Do you want to play injured or fatigued therefore loosing your place?'
'Or do you want to be fit and fresh in every game you play and therefore able to give your best?'
I don't buy that players insist on being 1st choice, not these days. It feels like it's a think from the past that belongs in hoof football and breaking players legs in a tackle. Things have moved on. IMHO.
Its also a question of mentality
People going on about a fourth cb whos expected to learn Peps system but also told that they will play 35 games but unlikely to play the important games.

The only type of defender who will do that will be 1) old & very unlikely to adapt to Peps passing from the back, 2) a player motivated by money or 3) youngster who is just starting out

Pep has let Egan Riley go & Tosin went cheaply last season so other than Mbete who's signed a new contract & has probably been offered the 4cb but people on here are saying hes not upto it. So that leaves options 1 & 2

As option 1 would be a cheap option so probably having Otamendi back & 2 would mean offering silly wages for someone who's gonna want to move on. I thought we'd moved away from paying silly wages for average players.

Peps successful squad harmony as been built on players being treated the same

What change in system its 2 players for 1 position the centre backs is 4 for 2 positions. It’s the same thing.
Phillips is a midfielder and he will get his minutes playing in that position. Hence why he was prepared to move.

You do realise at least 2 CBs play every game right. Can't work.out if uour wording is accidental or deliberate, but none would be 'spare', 3 for 2 positions is unmanageable for a season of circa 60 games, no matter how good they are.
An extra one on along with of the current spare defender will be a problem as the new signing would too be expecting meaningful minutes.

Why are we staring playing 2 d.ms? Okay lets say we are we still have 6 midfielders for 3 positions. We look like we’ll have 4 full backs for 2 positions, so why would we risk 3 centre backs for 2 positions. What would be the reason when we don’t need to . Makes no sense.

Put it this way he will get more game time than the extra defender signing. Keeping Ake would be great for us (which I want to happen) but not great for the player.
