It's Quiet 17 - Glory Thread

My guess is ornstein got the zinchenko news from arsenal and released it early. This hampered our negotiations for cucurella. Brighton can put whatever price they want if they know we already parted with zinchenko and have no LB.
Martin news today was damage control
Maybe. But I’m not sure we have even bid yet. Its like we need the money from one to sign the other but given the money we have made from outgoings that can’t be correct either.

It may seem like I'm being a c@nt, but with Haller just getting diagnosed with a testicular tumour, this may be a good time to swoop in for Bellingham.

With the added money they can buy a replacement attacker & midfielder.

That's a good analysis in terms of the numbers. Now in terms of quality:

Harland is 100% a big improvement up front. His signing alone shows a step up in quality. However, as good as Palmer is (or can be), he won't step up and like for like replacement for Sterling this season. If Mahrez gets injured then we are light on that side of the pitch. Although apparently Alvarez can play RW too - so depends how strongly he starts.

Phillips is a decent replacement for Ferds who was only a bit part player. Overall though he isn't improving our 1st team squad.

Overall I'd say yes we've taken a small step forward but could we do more? Sure. And the most pertinent point is we have cash to burn!

Question is, are we going big this season or waiting for someone next season...

Last season we were stretched beyond belief from the Atletico game to the end of the campaign really. We had Cancelo, Stones, Laporte, Ake as our back 4 against Atletico at home. Then Walker, Stones, Laporte, Cancelo for Liverpool at home and Atletico away (Ake coming on for Walker after 73mins). Cancelo, Stones, Ake, Zinchenko played the FA Cup semi (Steffen in goal of course).

We were really reliant on the squad. Stones and Zinchenko were the full backs vs. Real at home, until Ferny had to come on at RB. Then it was Walker and Cancelo in the return leg, with Zin coming on when Walker couldn't continue.

One the one hand you say we were minutes from the CL final and we won the league despite a really unlucky run of games and significant injuries. On the other, you say we need additional players so we're not having to rely on unorthodox full backs and can better compete in the big games. Ortega coming in makes the FA Cup team instantly better, as he looks like he can play our passing style, which Steffen was never capable of. Phillips replacing Fernandinho gives us so much more energy in the middle (or at RB!).

But we need a LB, and ideally it's in addition to Zinchenko... which clearly isn't going to be the case.

Unless we are waiting on the Mendy trial it would have been better for City to have signed Cucrella, or similar left footed full back, and then considered any offers from Zin. If Zin goes every club knows we need a LB and it strengthens their position price wise. Piece of the jigsaw is missing and I guess we will never know.

Which you could say tells you one of a couple of things. Otherwise, the club would have gone in and signed Cucurella no matter what, paid what it takes and got him in, when they did that with all the other targets.

Either the club aren't really in the market for a LB and are intereated in Cucurella or others down the list purely as a replacenent should Zinchenko leave.

Or Brighton are looking for too high a value, and the club are happy to be patient and stick with what they have, unless their arm is twisted by something like Zinchenko leaving.
