It's Quiet 17 - Glory Thread

Unless we are waiting on the Mendy trial it would have been better for City to have signed Cucrella, or similar left footed full back, and then considered any offers from Zin. If Zin goes every club knows we need a LB and it strengthens their position price wise. Piece of the jigsaw is missing and I guess we will never know.

One other thing to consider comparing squads. Last season Lavia, Egan Riley, Burns, Mbete, Kayky, Wilson-Esbrand and Delap all played in the cups and featured on the bench. There’s a good chance that none of those players will be here next season, having left permanently or on loan. Any kids on the bench or Carabao next season will be pretty young. Hence I don’t see many kids, outside of McAtee, featuring next season.
This is the big thing for me. Much less experience overall even in the youth squad. An injury crisis would kill us.

Fair enough mate. Happy to admit got that one wrong although in ideal world would still want us to sign another full back even if zinchenko stays

You didn't get it wrong. We are currently going with a smaller squad than last year, and smaller than typical squads, both ours and others'.

You can still believe in the squad, and that the quality and flexibility is enough. But it is a squad with 2 spare spaces in the NHG slots, in addition to 3 spare spaces of CT slots (which in fairness we never had more than 2 of anyway and is our biggest issue long term). The youth element has generally always been the same.

3 fullbacks is too much of a risk based on the games we play and a World Cup sandwiched in between. We should keep
Zinchenko and look to bring Cucurella in. 2 right backs and 2 left backs. No doubt there will be niggling injuries for one or two of them. Ake shouldn’t be being considered as a left back, simple as.

My guess is ornstein got the zinchenko news from arsenal and released it early. This hampered our negotiations for cucurella. Brighton can put whatever price they want if they know we already parted with zinchenko and have no LB.
Martin news today was damage control

I always wanted both zinny and cucurella. It's fantastic depth.

I also think with Phillips and with how Bernie is dropping deeper that we will play (we did last season) more of the 4231 with 2 in midfield behind a 10 (usually kdb).

I see no reason why zinny can't be depth here as well, with the other options of rodri, phillips, Bernie and gundogan.

I would even like to see gundogan pushed higher to rotate with kdb more as a 10 than deeper. Look at the aston villa game at the end, pep in one of the rare times last season gave gundogan freedom to score goals and he did.

The season prior gundogan was so good because pep gave him that freedom, he took it back last season for control, but zinny and Phillips could just as easily do that job further back.
