It's Quiet 17 - Glory Thread

He's not a great defender in the very classical sense. But he's made more tackles than anybody in the City team, in both defensive and attacking areas. He also tops the interceptions chart.

He defends in a different way which for the way we play has its major benefits.
You explained it better than I did :) This is what I was really trying to get at. Good post.

I don't their as an actual all round left back or right back to be honest in Europe that is good going both ways it seems to be one or the other. Alexander Arnold is the same brilliant going forward but defensively the opposition always target his side. Take Ashley Cole for example he was unbelievable at both he's possibly the best fullback to ever play in the league, Then again would he be able to play as a converted full back and recieve the ball in midfield areas taking people on and picking out passes. Suppose its just the way the game has moved on really full backs are expected to play as right wingers now but also expected to do the defensive duties too.
It’s getting the balance right. All players have positives and negatives.

Liverpool rely on their fullbacks to create more, so have a more defensive midfield to cover them as they bomb forwards.

We use one as an auxiliary holding midfielder to prevent counter attacks.

Sure and I’m not trying to get the lad sold as he is a superb weapon for us.

If you were to have to put your life on someone defending a 1v1, you wouldn’t pick Cancelo.

People see weaknesses where they want. Personally I think Sterling and Mahrez have more than proved their quality over and over again with goals and titles. In terms of “the opposition” the only team in England close to us are Liverpool. As I said earlier I prefer the depth of quality In our squad.

Honestly and this isn’t a dig at you, if I hadn’t come on Bluemoon yesterday I would never have known so many people think our attack, even with Haaland, is a weakness.
Yeah there's always room for improvement, and this City team/squad could be better, but sometimes I think people take it too far.

When they say we weren't good enough to make the CL final, it was down to crazily fine margins that weren't about the squad. We played great in both legs, missed a ton of chances in the first game and then conceded twice at the death in the 2nd with our outright best defender having gone off injured.

And with the FA Cup, we were playing a full strength Liverpool side (ie the team that most on here think are better than us) where they had the luxury of a piss easy game in the week and we just played Atlético. And we had another game with Atlético a few days later to think about and they had an extremely easy game again in the week.

A bigger squad would've helped, especially in the FA Cup, but there's only so much we can account for bad luck in our plans.

Declan Rice is the only player we should be looking at for the DM role. He would challenge Rodri, could play alongside him and have more of an advanced role and has shown he can play on the big stage. I thought he was excellent against us on Sunday. He'd cost a fortune but it's such a critical position it's worth spending the money on in my opinion. I'd rather we looked to "save" money at full back by finding players with pace that weren't necessary the best defenders or best technically. Pace is something we lack and in our system we're usually having to scramble into positions if our press is played through successfully.
