It's Quiet 17 - Glory Thread

I think we can all be a bit guilty of looking at things in a very black and white, Football Manager way of "Player A is better than Player B so we should sign Player A."

There are a lot of intangibles though in real life. One thing I keep thinking about is the character and energy of the squad. This group has been through a lot. Four successive summers of losing legendary players/captains. Increasingly demoralizing Champions League exits. Arteta leaving, who was very popular with the players. One big character and (formerly) very popular squad member now persona non grata and in potentially very serious legal trouble.

Maybe the mood and energy in the camp is a big factor when we're looking for additions. Perhaps someone like Phillips (as an example) is seen as the type of character that can come in and make a difference on that front, in a way that a young kid from Brazil or France may not be able to

Hi, was that directed at anyone?

What about a kid from Norway and a kid from Argentina? Those are okay?

Really good post. I must admit, I didn't think Ake was right for City and he struggled with his injuries and form in his first year. This season though, he's looked much more settled and his character and mentality show he's made of the right stuff. I'm sure I heard as many as nine of our players wanted him to be captain not long after he walked through the door at City.

I think that it may be the same with some transfer targets. Obviously Haaland's abilities aren't in doubt but he might bring a ruthlessness that we sometimes lack. Phillips may bring leadership and nous as well as a playing style that we don't currently have since Fernandinho passed his peak.

Come on, you are better than that.

Haaland has been setting records in the Bundesliga and CL and Alvarez has been playing for one of the biggest clubs in Argentina and scoring in the highest competition in the region.

Bit different to tchouameni who has been playing in the weakest french league in years.

I don’t think he was talking about Tchouameni. But it could work for him as well.

Tchouameni seems fine for Liverpool and Real Madrid, but for us?

The gymnastics to justify 26 yo Kalvin Phillips as a nice guy, “what he adds to the squad”, price (as if it’s better than it actually it is), are funny to me, just seems to show some people are insecure about defending him on the technical level alone.

But that’s okay. I don’t think we’ll sign him anyway, and I’ll observe the reactions when another club signs him (and we get a better choice)
