It's Quiet 17 - Glory Thread

they play in the same position, for start? opposite foot winger. up to the arrival of grealish, all of our wingers (mahrez, sterling, sane, foden, torres) were expected to chime in for goals and assists. for some reason that's not the expectation for grealish, and if you ask me, it's not because he's not expected to, but because he hasn't provided them.
I certainly had no expectation of goals and assists. Never in his career has he shown that is his game, so why is it going to change now?

The price tag is why people have expectations and for the uninformed and WUM's at other clubs I would expect this sort of nonsense but surely anyone thats been watching City since Pep arrived can see that isn't how we work.

Just curious...why do you think that is?
not enough quality in the final 3rd. which begs to question what the point of getting him was

I don't know what you expected mate but it's ridiculous to pay 100m for a winger you had no expectation of goals and assists for and every person with an understanding of football would laugh at you for saying it. it sounds so ridiculous. you are just lowering the expectations for him so drastically to avoid the conversation that he's been a huge disappointment

Anybody with an understanding of football would see he's doing a ton of work that is positive and it's well known that he probably would have several more assists if we had a finisher in the team. As I said, he didn't score or assist a ton at Villa and he was their main player, so what chance did he have joining our team where there are several players who are scoring and assisting.

What he’s gonna have to do sooner than later is become a protagonist in the team. I also don’t agree that you can’t complain about his lack of goals and assists as he has himself said he feels let down with himself in those areas — and so I expect him to know he needs to work on improving his contribution

As I stated earlier its way too early to judge...he's not on a 1 year deal...just watch him and its obvious he's deferring to others...not the easiest club in the world to jump into full bore...he's working hard...not a matter of lazing about...there needs to be a certain level of comfort in order for him to play the way he did at Villa...I'm not guaranteeing anything, but having watched him at Villa and even for England my expectations are that he will be a big asset to the club over the next 5 or so years...to be fair, anyone in the football world with a real understanding might laugh at your rush to judgement...just saying...

listen you brought forward a fair list of arguments, but let's be real they are all excuses. you can use these arguments to excuse a player basically giving 1/10 every game of a season as much as you can use them to excuses a player giving 5/10s every game. like i said, jack's season has been levels below riyad, joao, rodro and ferran's first seasons. and for the price tag it's a huge disappointment. and if you can't see why a bigger price tag means its a bigger disappointment, it directly stems from the fact the club's budget is limited.

nothing against jack but observations about his season have to be truthful even if we don't like it

"a ton of work that is positive" yes but so does palmer and he cost nothing mate. for 100m i want him to do a ton more than that. and if he doesn't provide goals and assists then we shouldn't have bought him

if he does "a ton of work that is positive" why doesn't he play any game in the crucial stretch of the season now? play him vs madrid in the 2nd leg then! but you know as much as i do that'd be a ridiculous suggestion given how little he adds to our game and you'd much rather play, well, the other players.

suddenly when it's the crunch end of the season and you have to decide who starts in the big game, "doing a ton of work" sounds more like self justification rather than substantial analysis of jack, doesn't it?

He isn’t a winger, not in the way Mahrez was or is, more like David Silva was a winger at one point. Comparings the two is daft. Most likely Grealish was bought to play in midfield, and will at some point.

I love grealish. I love his face. His big ole smile. hes so happy when we score and hes not even playing. Hes got lots of team spirit and is stoked to be on team. With Calves like that you know hes going to be running non stop as well. He has played good for us already and he will only get better. He takes the burden off a KDB injury. He is quick witted and calm on the ball. Lovely lil chap. No idea why you give a hoot what he cost. Has nothing to do with him as a person or a player. Having him on the bench keeps us from being stretched and precariously thin as a team.

then stop playing him on the wing right now, i thought the entire point of his first season was to familiarize him with his position, formation and role in the team, why play him in a position he's not gonna play in?

also, he's 26.5! when we bought david he was 23. how many seasons is he gonna play on the wing until he's ready to play centrally? when he's 30?

well first of all he absolutely doesn't run "non stop" in fact i am pretty sure he runs less than most other players in the team. second of all he's literally the opposite of "quick witted" he's insanely slow thinking with his play and takes an extremely long time to make a decision, that's one of his main drawbacks, so i reject that. furthermore I give a hoot what he costs, again, because every pound spent on him is a pound less spent on other purchases. the team's budget is not endless. therefore it's extremely important from future transfers' perspective how much a player costs.

there is no one on this forum that loves it more when jack plays well and that praises him when he genuinely deserves it, but i am not gonna sit here and lie to myself that he has been good. i would love for him to become good. when he becomes good we'll know. but it's not the case currently, sorry mate

Well david and Bernardo Silvas are two players that started on the wing. When they were ready they were moved central. Neither were trusted in midfield initially. I suspect the same applies to Grealish. Personally I trust Pep to know what he wants from Grealish and how to get it, I’ve learnt he usually does.

If it was possible to give you a thousand likes I would definitely give them to you right now.
Preach Brother, tell it like it is!!!

Nail. On. Head.

I just think he's deferring to his teammates way too much...maybe he's worried about fitting in, not rocking the boat...at the same time pressing a bit, trying not to screw up...those of you on here saying the guy can't play gain very little credibility...let's see how he does as he climbs up the squad's pecking order...if the team were struggling and relying heavily on him I could understand some of the frustration...but we're a game from going back to the CL final and still the frontrunners in the league...people killing the guy non-stop...let the Reds' supporters knock our guys...who cares if your wife or girl wants to bang him...not like its really going happen...
We are destroying the likes of Sancho, so it works both ways.

He is a player who has played in the Premier so there should be no time to settle in this league and he looked decent in the early part of the season, he simply has not pushed on.

He has got huge personality, he showed that at Villa, but he looks lost here, a huge disappointment at this time and he needs to step up big time.

Can't believe this is being done again. The amount of players we have signed (even before Pep) that haven't 'hit the ground running' but have gone on to be stars of the team and fans can't show patience.
This time next season, he will be playing centrally, after learning our style out on the wing. Pep obviously didn't even think it was a gamble - happy to go with him on this one.

The accent though.....

KDB aside, our best and most effective players this season … cancelo, rodri, mahrez
All struggled at first. Its a well trodden path
