It's Quiet 17 - Glory Thread

He's far more comfortable playing as an orthodox left-back.

My only concern would be why Chelsea are buying Cucurella. Perhaps they are worried Chilwell will not be the same player after his injury?

For me, Chilwell would be ok, but that's all. I'm not convinced he's good enough on the ball for us. He'd certainly be a step down from Zin in terms of ball retention (though maybe stronger in defensive situations admittedly).

We didn't miss out on Cucurella. We were never in for him, for more than £40m

Call it what you want but fact remains he is now a Chelsea player and we have no leftback. That’s a concern, fullbacks is a light area after Zinchenko’s departure and not many leftbacks available on the market is even an upgrade to Zinchenko.

I think it’s now with Laporte being injured become an issue of bodies

We have 5 first team defenders fit and 3 of them spent most of the run in last year injured.

Peps a genuine world class coach, he’s managed to turn Delph and Zinchenko into top performing Title Winning left backs.

Just get him a technically sound left footed player, who won’t kick off if he’s on the bench and let him coach him.

JWE loves this.

Cancelo requires quality minutes at left-back.

Especially so, when other clubs aren't yet privy to what our intentions would also be towards a Mendy acquittal?

When we agreed the sale of Zin, we essentially told clubs we need another body in that position.

If Zin had been told to wait patiently for his Arsenal deal to be concluded, we may have afforded ourselves some breathing room on both a replacement and price.
I think it's entirely speculative as to whether keeping Zin would have aided our bargaining positions and unless we were going to tell him that he could not move if we did not find a replacement, I think it would have been pointless.

City treat players well and in the longer run, I think that will pay the most dividends. Of course we should be miserable fuckers when it comes to Bernie and tell him to suck it up ;-)

Making a bid for Chilwell might be sensible. I'm not his beggest fan but he is a proper left back and would make a decent back-up to Cancelo.

You pretty much described Zinchenko, but Pep can’t work magic. He never became a world class leftback. Quality is needed and then Pep adds his magic, as he did with Cancelo.

I honestly don’t know what leftback is worth looking into now with Cucurella gone.

I’d be happy ”converting” Aké into a leftback now with mostly shit leftbacks left on the market after Cucurella, because defensively he is very solid and he’s quick. My one concern is his (in)ability to attack. His attacking stats aren’t exactly glamorous.

We don’t need another Cancelo. We still have Cancelo. We need another Zinchenko - or a replacement, they do not need to be world class.

You’re wrong. If we needed another Zinchenko, we would never have sold him. He wanted to stay. It was pretty obvious in his last speech. The club’s ambition was to replace him with Cucurella and that would have been a massive upgrade but the clubs tactics failed. This time.

I’m not wrong. I never once said we weren’t trying to upgrade. We didn’t need another Zinchenko when we had Zinchenko but now we sold him and didn’t get Cucurella.

We need someone.
We don’t need someone who’s world-class.

As much as we’d love him to play an unproven youngster, he’s not going to it’s just not his MO. Especially in defence.

Don’t know whether its not wanting them having to figure out his style of coaching plus top level football all at once. Maybe too much to take in.
He's been with us for 3 years learning the Pep way, that's the beauty of the academy.

There was no point in selling Zinchenko if we don’t sign an upgrade. An upgrade means world class. And that’s what we need.
