Sovereign State is a country that rules itself.

Nation is a bit vaguer, usually means the group of people within a state, the population, who share a history and culture.

A nation with it's own Sovereign State, the whole shebang is called a Nation State.

I've never heard of Spain, Italy, the US etc. being referred to as nation states.
Personally I think because Nation owned or Country owned sounds odd journos like to use Nation State so they can use the term State owned. A bunch of superfluous bs...
