It's Quiet 18 - Wanna ring the bell?

we need a player to play wide....one injury to KDB and we have to move Bernardo inside as Kovacic isnt a creative player not a goal scorer...that leaves us light on the right hand side and Palmer isnt ready enough to do that job well enough consistently.

If we are considering Lavia it would suggest that Pep/Txixi dont think Phillips is going to step up...IF thats the case he is deadwood and needs selling - nice guy but no room for sentiment

To be fair I thought you were talking about this season because McAtee was on loan at Sheffield all season & unavailable

The post you responded to probably didn't make that clear. But if you read the chain of 2 or 3 posts back, I asked if he thought we would have won the treble with junior players instead of world class ones we had. And then to the 'who knows, why not' I asked if he would risk it to find out.

This season is somewhat different, but the bar is just as high. It is a lot to expect, and if we do go into the season with young players instead of senior ones, it'll be as much to do with the lack of choice as choosing to trust them.

But then, there is Rico Lewis who nobody saw coming last season. He broke into a treble winning team when nobody had even mentioned him the summer before, and outperformed a seasoned professional who ended up getting punted out on loan.

Excellent post. When you mention does Palmer have the "personality?" I assume that includes humbleness and self discipline?

Many young athletes with incredible talent end up being mediocre or worse professionals because once they turn professional at the highest level they think they've "made it," and don't need to keep working. Whereas, an athlete with maybe less natural ability but who "gets it" that the hard work is still ongoing outclasses the more talented player.
He does have humbleness and self discipline I dont doubt that but thats not the part of his attitude that worries me

If you look at two key midfielders from Peps reign in David Silva and Ilky Gundogan they are the epitome of the personalities that Pep wants......humble as you say but also absolute killers on the pitch (Silva even had a little nasty streak in him which went under the radar - for me he eclipses KDB as he was never less than an 8/10 everytime he stepped onto the pitch).....you need that aggression/deisre to win, willingness to run through brick walls for whoever and whatever....at such a young age I wouldnt expect Palmer to have everything BUT look at foden - he was driven from the moment you saw him step onto that pitch - even in the friendlies....something about Palmer is lacking in that sense at present -he is languid as Ive mentioned before.....he doesnt seem to have that killer/drive instinct in him

Im NOT saying he wont get it....Im just saying at present he hasnt got it and needs time to develop it.....a year at a lower league club or even a mid table prem team might help him develop from a kid into a man as he isnt there yet.

Technically he is obviously very good.....but so are many many youth players

Happened last year with players they registered them a day or two before season started..
yup same media narrative every year for a few seasons....absolute clickbait and story telling with no substance whatsoever

Might be wrong but I thought palmer had only a year left on his contract which may make things different
