It's Quiet 18 - Wanna ring the bell?

Hooray! Ezzy is back

Was just thinking exactly the same mate!

The Ezzy approach is pure gamer bullshit, with no acknowledgement of the reality of City’s position in the game.

We’re competing against the very best clubs in Europe to be considered top of the pile - with all the expectation and pressure that brings - so we simply can’t be exposing ourselves to the level of risk involved in filling our team with players like this.

We have to let other clubs take the risk, bringing these players over to the PL/Europe and showing they can thrive in this environment before we decide whether to move for them or not.

That way risk of them failing doesn’t sit with us - it sits with a Brighton or a Brentford or a Wolves.

With respect, we’re not competing at the same level as those clubs anymore. We’re trying to win the League and the Champions League every season.

If we take a risk and it fails, we risk losing out on the biggest prizes football has to offer.

If Brentford or Brighton buy a dud, it’s not going to be the difference between winning a League title or finishing with nothing. It has an impact, sure - but it’s just not the same.

It’s all about risk - it’s not complicated.

That’s why Mendes has been doing what he does at Wolves - bringing players into the PL and de-risking them for the bigger clubs, selling on those that work for a much bigger fee.

Clubs like us or Liverpool then reward others for taking the risks we can’t afford to by paying more than they did for the same players.

Wolves and Nunes is an example of this. He was a risk when they bought him last summer - he’s much less of a risk now. So we ended up paying Wolves for taking the risk on him.

That’s how football has always worked.

We can take the odd gamble which pays off like Alvarez, sure - but for every Alvarez there are way more Kaykys and Marlos Morenos that simply can’t make the transition.

One on the players on that list above is Martin Payero who was at Middlesbrough and has just signed for Udinese. Not saying he hasn’t got potential, but it would be quite a leap, and not just of imagination, to see him with us. Notwithstanding, he did score against that lot in the FA Cup, so there is already a beer in my fridge for him.

Bang on.
Plus we have the ‘players who might improve us’ thread for players who have had zero credible links to City
Otherwise the transfer forum just gets clogged up with wild flights of Football Manager fancy

Don’t think Alvarez was ever a gamble

Don’t think Alvarez was ever a gamble

A gamble in terms of settling in the UK and being able to demonstrate how talented he is on a consistent basis.

Purely from a talent perspective alone, I’d completely agree - but it’s never just about talent when you move continents and cultures like Julian did when he left Argentina.

Pep’s requirements are difficult enough to get your head around if you’re moving from one of Europe’s major leagues. Moving from the other side of the world makes his rapid acclimatisation even more remarkable.

The Argentinians seem to settle in well, wherever they go.
We've had a good few.
