People say it's mischief making, but to me it all reads like City playing their cards.
Ortega was rumoured to be unhappy as a number two. Club want to keep him. Ederson is frustrated after the injury and probably Ortega stealing the show.. it will pass. But sure, if anyone asks, he could go, for an astronomical fee. Ortega would be clear number one. It reinforces the competition between them. Ederson has to get over this moment on his own. If he stays, it's his choice. And the competition for the GK spot is real. Which is what Ortega needs to hear to know he is valued, and to believe he isn't second string.
Paqueta has been on the radar for ages now. The deal was all but done - personal terms agreed. And yet it remains impossible to conclude because the investigation is ongoing. Regardless of City's intention, we can rehash both of those facts. Why? Well, we might want him. But it also reinforces our position if we do starting discussions over other players.. Don't ask for the world, we're already half committed to spend big on this guy. Also if we don't like the deal we'll just fall back to Paqueta.
Pep happy with the squad and academy? Sure. It's a great squad with no obvious glaring holes. We don't need to make up the numbers. If the right players became available, well, maybe that would be different. It's just the bleeding obvious. You can read whatever you like into it.
