It's Quiet - a new dawn

Genuine question.......so is this a positional weakness at DM or a weakness in Pep's system, that he's going to have to change?

Not sure that Pep sees this " weakness " in his system, but Fernandinho is no longer the player he was when he first arrived .

During the course of the this thread FFP has been mentioned a few times so just thought I would check how much we spent in the 3 seasons sunsequent to our first league win.

In euros 260 million which is actually quite a lot.

Buying a specialist defensive midfield player has to be a priority at some point in the near future because unless Pep uses Stones in the role, I don't believe that we have a player suitable for the role.

I still think we've no need for that type of player when utilising a back 3/5. David Silva could easily play that role and do it well enough to not worry about trying to look like a DM.
With all due respect, to David he'd be abslolutely swamped in that role. Technically I've no doubt he could do it with both eyes closed.Whether he could compete physically, on the other hand (particularly when our opponents press) is somthing I rather doubt.

That's how I see it ,Fern struggled v Bournemouth , he can't keep putting fires out on his own , Liverpool will dick us if Fern is alone.

I'm not sure what fires he actually has to put out? We dominate possession every game, his position should be one of the easiest on the pitch given our dominance and yet the majority of games we see him struggle. He just isn't as good as he was or as good as Pep thinks he is.

I agree that we need a better/faster/younger/more-consistant Fernandinho (as much as I like the guy) but it's surely not Stones. I'm only just getting used to him playing half decently as a defender in the time his played this summer. It's a huge leap to think of him actually playing in midfield.

It may be contrary to popular opinion but he isn't a good passer of the ball (IMO). You can tell by his tempo. He doesn't make quick decisions, his passes are relatively slow/imprecise and they're one dimensional, i.e. no triangles or ambition. Compare that to the likes of Garcia who's constantly looking for the ball in order to move it intelligently and his passing is crisp and snappy.

If Stones is to live up to not be a complete waste of money then I hope he proves himself to be a decent central defender and leaves the midfield to midfielders. If no one has faith in him as a defender then let him go on loan somewhere to try to improve or sell him.

Have to say I agree totally about Stones.
He's young and hopefully will learn and develop, but currently he does not look like he has the speed of thought.
He dithers trying to compute his options instead of having them already mapped before he steps forward.
He's a CB looking forward at the whole park. He should have it all mapped in his head without effort.

Compare that to Yaya or Silva (both) or KDB who are in the centre and know where the ball is going before it even arrives at their feet.
That's natural with them. It isn't natural with Stones and he has the luxury of more time on the ball. When he's pressed his passing goes to shit.
