The lack of any other link with LB means that Mendy is still priority but doesn't it also mean that if we fail to land him we are in trouble with no possible back up?

Don't want us to make a panic buy on TDD by purchasing someone like Gaya for 45M.

It sounds from Tolmie as if we are sitting on a part of our transfer chest in case Mbappe says yes, and that's why we are not very actively pursuing CB and DM players. I am not sure what I'd rather have: Mbappe or a CB and a DM (Van Dijk and Fabinho for example). I think Van Dijk and Fabinho would actually be more needed, provided we get our other tranfers targets, specifically Sanchez.

Do you mean other than the links to Bertrand and Grimaldo? Or are we just excited at the idea of panicking?

That may be part of it, but for me I think it's more, at the end of next season Toure, Fernandinho and Kolarov are out of contract, to bring in a CM or centre back and keep to 17 non homegrown one or two would need to be sold, similar to our fullback situation last summer. I think next summer with those 3 out of contract we will bring in a centre mid and new centre back. I think ideally we would rather get Mbappe next summer too, maybe with Aguero going. There was talk a week or so ago we had already agreed a deal with Atletico Madrid for Hernandez next summer.

as a club going forward I would prefer to get fabinho and VVD mate. yeah without question mbappe is a huge talent but will he progress to the ultimate best? because for £120m plus he needs to be beyond brilliant every game! if we get sanchez and keep Sergio then alongside sane, jesus and raheem then we already have lods of options? being fed by merlin, the apprentice, the ginger prince and gundogan then we are well stacked! if we then added walker, VVD, fabinho, mendy alves and Bertrand then wow! a squad to fight for 4 trophies!

That's basically was what I was thinking too. blueparrot pointed out that we may have a deal for Hernandez from Atletico for next season though.

Absolutely spot on. Defensive signings tend not to be seen as exciting by the average fan, but signing the players you mention would make us serious contenders for the big trophies this season and are the absolute top priority.

I wouldn't swop jesus or sane for anyone mate and I feel they need to keep playing as much as possible. I really want sanchez here and Sergio is an obvious keep. we really need that defence makeover that has been required for a couple of years now. we have added bernardo silva already and the keeper situation is now also sorted so get the fullbacks, a top centre back and fabinho and we are up there with the best.
 
Is anyone watching Germany vs Australia? Leon Goretzka is the deal. Last year of contract we should sign him before Bayern land him for a free deal.
 
Sky linking us to the Ox now. If Guardiola sees him as a potential fullback, it wouldn't be a terrible idea. got the attributes he wants, it's whether he's capable to adapting and whether he wants to.

And yet I can see the club's strategy. They want to be THE dominant club in the world. The one every major young player wants to sign for. Getting the single biggest wonderkid in world football cements that. And in doing so, the club creates a pulling power that will make a lot of other future deals much likely.

Purely in terms of building a team I agree, I'd rather have a CB and DM for that money. But to build the club, you want Mbappe.

No for me, he's nowhere near good enough for us, even if he may have stagnated a tad at Arsenal. I don't think his ceiling is anywhere near the level we need.

Right this second maybe but wonder kids come and go. This year's Mbappe is last years Sanches or Dembele.

I just have this feeling that Monaco was the absolute perfect platform for Mbappe in every way and even us and Real can't match the scenarios he enjoyed right now. He'd be under more pressure, with higher quality opponents and without a suddenly break-out young team and a rejuvenated former best forward in the world to take up the slack.

It was the perfect storm this season for him and who knows if it will be next.
