It's Quiet - a new dawn

The defence is sorted. The 3 fullbacks will save 10 league goals a season vs. last year and that's more than we needed to improve. The keeper will save another 5. Evans brings experienced depth at worst.

The biggest problem we have is forming a group dynamic where the attack is free flowing and better than the sum of its parts, where players can come in and out without losing fluency.
15 you say? What are Friday's lottery numbers.

Seriously, look back though the 39 goals we conceded last season, and I guarantee 5 of them were Bravo disasters that Ederson won't concede, and at least 5-10 were caused by the ageing, slow, weak fullbacks not being able to cover counterattacks 1v1. They are goals we just simply won't concede with the players we have now, and that's why Pep hasn't made the superstar CB signing a priority.

Agreed

Clichy was responsible for at least 5 I can think of

The biggest problem we have is breaking well organised packed defences. Apart from the top six teams you can predict the rest of the league have got us sussed and know how to stifle the attacks and will look to score from breakaways of dead ball situations. From what I've see so far this season nothing has changed from last season, other than we should get better crosses from the new fullbacks. Plenty of possession but getting nowhere. OK Sanchez would be an upgrade on Sterling, but we need I think we a tall bully of a centre half who add something different to the attack. Not the Barca way but Barca don't play in the Prem.

That will come with the new players gelling. Bernardo Silva & Gundogan will unlock defences with KDB and Silva, it's just a case of moving the ball quickly and taking the chances we create - it's nothing new for Guardiola that's what he dealt with every week in Spain and Germany.

Well going on start of this season, we need a central defender with some pace.
With a back 3 or 4 our full backs/ wing backs will usually be pushed forward and when move breaks down kompany, stones and Otomendi are to slow, if hit with long ball to nippy forward or winger. IMO.

We could quite easily have conceded at least 2 more goals on Saturday. Volley from Defoe and that late shot that hit the post. We must not get complacent, not many teams will play in such an open way as Bournemouth, to allow us the win. A Pulis side would probably have shut up shop. United will probably have a much tighter defence. They haven't conceded a PL goal yet.

How do we explain the two clear chances Bournemouth had ?

Exactly. The problem with that logic is that everything we did well will stay the same and everything we did poorly will be improved which isn't realistic. There'll be other things to adjust too this year. For example we did well defending on set pieces.

Will there be an overall net gain? For sure but none of this FB's saving us 7 goals and the keeper 6 stuff type stuff.
