If our aim has been the next spend trophy , you cannot equally say we clearly overpaid for Grealish and Nunez . If our aim had been the net spend trophy we would not have overpaid .We do back the manager and we do spend money but our focus especially in recent years seems to have been on the net spend trophy.
This isn't revisionism or hindsight but most blues would have said that £100m on Grealish was too much. Phillips & Nunes were never going to be good enough. Especially when the latter went to Wolves the summer before for less than £30m.
For whatever reason, in recent years we've not signed our first choice player. Rice, Kane, Bellingham all rejected us. Before that, Dias was our 3rd choice centre half, Rodri wasn't our first choice either. Go back further, we baulked at getting Van Dyke & Harry Maguire (LOL).
Transfers don't happen, I get that. And we can't force players to sign but Wirtz is a genuine world class talent, in a position we desperately need to fill. He's as close to De Bruyne as you can get and we've given Liverpool a free hit at him.
It's all opinions but for a team allegedly wanting to win the league and win the CL. Signing someone like MGW isn't going to achieve that. Especially with the substantial drop in quality in our squad.
You might call that "tosh", that's fine. Plenty of others agree though.
In recent years we have not always signed our first choice player. But sometimes we do Haaland , Gvardiol , Grealish all appear to have been first choice when signed, bit like most other teams really.
As for giving Liverpool a free hit at Wirtz nobody on a message board truly knows what happened, but most of the suggestions are that we haven't given Liverpool a free hit but withdrawn because he doesn't want us.
Your statement that was tosh was that Liverpool back their manager more than we do in the transfer market.
They've made some excellent signings , some poor ones and have missed out on some, just like us.
Personally I wouldn't swap our recent trophy haul with theirs though.
