It's Quiet the £250m return

If it was a difference maker footballer, I would agree mate.

However, I can't see the club breaking the transfer record for a right back. He isn't going to be the difference between us winning the league and not.

Most of the attacks we conceded goals from last season started from the flanks. Not tracking the runners especially on the right. Tottenham an example took advantage of our right side running in behind. Palace the same. Blueprint to get at us last season was attack our fullbacks. So it would make sense why the club want to improve that area of the pitch. Nunes good attacking but has a brain fart or two defensively. Gvardiol the same on the left.

When teams broke our midfield they pass it out wide and get in behind for the cutback on the counter as our fullback couldn’t defend or track the runner consistently

What is this fascination with a right back all about? Liverpool just won the league with Terence Trent D’arby at right back, Madrid knocked us out of the CL with a midfielder playing at right back, Arsenal have Ben White playing there, whist Barca have Kounde there. If Hakimi isn’t available, and he’s not, the mark up from Nunes isn’t that huge, whoever we get, especially as we now have a left back.

I think it's exactly this line of thinking that has hindered us in the last few years.

Matheus Nunes at right back is the weak link in our team right now. We have the funds to improve in that position. Why would we simply make do when we've already shown that we're not fucking about in the transfer market?

There are plenty of options out there. Livramento being one of them.

Because the one we have been playing there had a complete meltdown in the final two minutes of the home match against United and lost us that game. I don't want that happening again

Not to mention the regular, suicidal backpasses from both full backs

He was just unfortunate that it was against the rags and so not as easily forgotten/forgiven as some of the mistakes our other players made.

Other clubs will know we have to get rid of players & will low ball us for transfer fees, we'll probably have to practically give them away to get them off the books
We will get low balled if only one club wants that player. The players we are looking to offload are not dross (despite what is said by some on here) and auctions will always be created and give us a decent deal.

At the time. Just like everybody else ffs lol
His issues were not purely Covid related like others struggling with lockdown.

He is a further quote:

“ The city [Manchester] was different from my culture and what I was used to. The change from Lisbon to Monaco to here, apart from football, was not easy. “

He went in to say the support of the fans helped get him through which was nice to hear.

Anyways it was clear he struggled to adapt which was my original point.

As it stands we need to lose two foreign players just to register the 3 new signings - and that's assuming Reis and Echeverri are loaned. If you go for a non-HG right back, you need to lose 3. And that's before we get into the goalkeeping situation.

At least two of the following will surely go: Akanji, Nunes, Kovacic, Gundogan, Bernardo.

Personally, I'd try and move on Gundogan, Kovacic and Nunes this summer, and then let Bernardo and Akanji go in 2026 - with ready made replacements in Echeverri and Reis.

Well said Sir

We only need to lose 2 if we want to register them all for the CL squad. We're perfectly fine for the league. I wouldn't dismiss the idea of leaving somebody out of the initial CL squad, it's 8 games until registration reopens it's not the end of the world.

I said this last season but I firmly believe teams will treat the league phase less seriously and will play second string sides to get through and not worry about placement, PSG won the thing after scraping through the league in last place proving it matters little, there's more benefit to resting players to prevent burn out and injury than finishing high in the table. With that in mind, omitting a player or two at least until the group phase is done isn't going to be a big deal.

I know it would appear he might be off but as an example, lets say gundo stays and hes left out of the CL squad but still features in the league, given that he expects limited game time due to his age, Is it going to be a problem? I doubt it and we get much needed cover.

Alternatively, one of the younger lads still learning who is unlikely to play in those games anyway is left off, is that really going to harm his development?

I can see this becoming a more popular practice with the expanded calender and more injuries to contend with, it just needs 1 club to do it and be successful before everybody does it. Chelsea shown the theory of it could work reasonably well with their conference league stroll with their B team albeit at an extreme number and at a substantially inferior level.

Good point as I do remember Bernie listing the cultural differences when he was interviewed a while back & his preference for the al-fresco lifestyle. I'm assuming he walked down to Piccadilly Gardens & realised what the hell is this :-)

Hopefully Cherki doesn't fall into this bracket & Bernie gives him some more upbeat info of settling into Manchester.

Players probably weren't too bothered being left out of a conference league squad,a champions league squad is avery different thing and most players wouldn't be happy with that.Gundogan possibly but even he might feell slighted by the suggestion.

I'd imagine player contracts also have CL related bonuses included in them i.e. being named in the squad, appearances, goals, clean sheets etc. So being left out would hit them in the pocket, obviously up to the club to decide who is in/out but no player is giving that up willingly.

Liverpool didn't have a midfield of uncs, Madrid have forwards who can actually score, and Barca and Arsenal good enough despite who they have at right back who are better than who we have now.

We have Mattheus Nunes and Rico Lewis.

I think Rico will be done tbh. Akanji will play there.
