It's Quiet the £250m return

Liverpool look like they’ve strengthened but still a lot of changes to a good team and never know how they all fit in.
My biggest worry is our right back, we went years without signing a proven left back now we seem to be doing the same on the other side. Depending who goes we may be lacking in midfield especially if Pep won’t play Nico.
Pep has lots of options upfront, my other worry is he doesn’t play Cherki as we needed someone to unlock defences and the existing players just didn’t really perform last season

So apart from worrying about liverpool, our defence, midfield and Cherki is everything else ok?

Objectively our squad is still as good as Liverpool’s. We had an off season and will be back. Squad values below.

Is Frimpong an upgrade on Trent? Nope. Is Kerkez and upgrade on Robertson? Nope. Is Ekitike and upgrade on Nunez? Maybe. Maybe not. You can't know until he actually starts playing, but if Nunez goes it doesn't automatically make them stronger.

Wirtz, absolutely. Upgrade because Klopp never really had a pure number 10 in the squad. But it also feels as though Wirtz is going to replace the creative output of Trent, which isn't the same as adding to Trent's creative output. None of this is to say Liverpool won't be a top side next season. But the assumption that every one of their signings is a proven top player isn't true.

When I look at our squad, what I see is a lot of players who have proven it over and over again and won titles, and a lot of young players with really high potential ceilings and the best coach in the world. Liverpool aren't going to walk the league next season. City are going to be an absolute menace because we've addressed 99% of our deficiencies since January and we should fly into the season.

Well put.
Liverpool are recruiting well, but they are replacing quality, and there are absolutely no guarantees: playing for a club like Bournemouth is not the same as competing for titles; coming from the Bundesliga is not the same as competing for the PL.

We have the same situation, but with more work needing to have been done. We have recruited a lot and there are no guarantees. The journey is part of the joy of being a fan and we have heaps of talent in our squad.

Despite the word around him being injured at the end of the CWC I am reliably informed it was a tiny niggle and that he's fit and raring to go for the season. Quite interesting which players have been in Manchester over the last couple of weeks. We've got a few lads who intend to not only hit the ground running, but shut up some of the rubbish narratives that have built up around them and around the club.

I love your optimism but I dont think that anywhere close to 99% of our weaknesses were addressed.

Maybe by the time the window shuts we will have but even then our biggest challenge is whether Pep's plan is effective or not.

I could possibly see few inconsistent results early on , but when it clicks then we'll be flying.

This is why I find some of the doom and gloom baffling - we've addressed some big problems, added goals & creativity and there will be a big group of players absolutely pissed off with last season.

I can see us having a season of dominance akin to the centurions (not saying we'll get 100 points of course. 100 goals, maybe)

I like Frimpong, but he's a midget and has spent the last 3 years playing almost as a winger in a back 3 system. I've seen tons of players with his attributes get quickly found out in a back 4. For me, he's a massive massive question mark. Kerkez did alright at Bournemouth but he doesn't have the technical quality or the physical attributes of Ait Nouri. He's a bit of an up and down merchant who isn't necessarily 8/10 at anything. That's not a critique either, just an observation.

They've currently got two CB's and Joe Gomez. They have Gravenberch, Endo, Alexis, and Dom Szob lined up against our Rodri, Reijnders, Bernardo, Nico G. I could go on, but the point is, unless you wanna be a dick and talk down City's players for the sake of it, in terms of proven quality we have a better squad, and in terms of depth we have a better squad.

Just keep swinging that ball over to their back post see how they deal having an umpa lumpa at RB then . . .

Didn't Khaldoun smile and say something like "we'll see" in his end of season interview when asked about the signing he's most excited about this summer?

Surely more to come.

We have addressed our weaknesses.

Viana is obsessed with data. He was obsessed at Sporting and from our recruitment this summer he’s doing that here.

“Viana is known for his data-driven approach to recruitment, utilizing analytics and real-time odds to identify talent and inform strategic decisions. “ taken from Football Analysis article

Didn’t create enough last season. We’ve gone and signed the best u23 creator in Europe in Cherki.

Lost control in midfield. Gone and signed one of the best box to box and attacking 8s in Europe last season in Reijnders

Our left side was our most attacking so we’ve improved it even more by signing the best left back in the prem last season data/stat wise.

Trafford another one fits us like a glove. If we go by data

Just need a right back that’s it.

Nice to see some positivity on here for a change Ahsan!

Are you able to name any of those lads, Nico G?

Like you I’m quietly optimistic going into this season, address goalkeeper and Right back (if there is not a Pep plan already in place within the current squad) as necessary and do the needful on transfers out and we’ll be good to go.

I really hope Pep gives trust and opportunity to Cherki early on, he’s the signing that excites me the most with his potential.

It’s not only on the media, do you not see how everyone gangs up on the Man City fan representative on the overlap, it could be Buvey, Big Steve, the younger lad, every episode is carragher, scholes, United fans, Chelsea fans etc all team up just attacking City. The hatred from the media, the fa and fan channels is insane
I know of it and what little I know is that Overlap is a Carragher and Neville production.

Foul!

I agree there is an awful lot of folks getting worked up over Liverpool’s spending. I’m more focussed on ourselves.

As far as I can see it, if we sort out our keeper situation and get a decent right back we’re in pretty good shape. I would be happier to see us figure out where we’re going in terms of centre half and midfield. In both cases we don’t really need additions unless there’s real movement.

I would have a slight concern that Pep’s loyalty to the likes of Stones, Akanji, Gundogan and Kovacic leaves with the same issues at times next season as last.

Love Stones but we can’t build a team around a guy that plays 15 matches a season.

Akanji was absolutely brilliant in the treble season, a real steal but recently every time he plays are defence looks ropey.

Gundogan’s football brain is incredible but his legs can’t keep up. He should be a finisher to close out matches and control tempo.

Kovacic did well towards the end of both last season and this but he’s never going to be a 6. His injury record isn’t great either.

During our awful winter of discontent last season we were over run in midfield time and again. Reijnders looks very good. Nico (x2) have decent potential. Bernardo will give his all as always. Rodri will take time to recover but when he does we’ll be a different prospect.

To me there’s a cognitive dissonance with Pep between wanting a small squad while remaining loyal to his trusted lieutenants and him wondering why we couldn’t compete in our bad run. Though Pep leaned heavily on the older guys in the run in which worked out, so no doubt he knows more than I do.

We may well start the season without Rodri as he builds up fitness. For me a world of difference in athleticism and physicality between a midfield pair of Reijnders and Nico compared to Gundogan and Bernardo.

Yep, you don't get Haaland's numbers by simply waiting for the ball to come in.
Yea and his scoring a hat trick in a game we win 3-0 or even 4-0 doesn't mean he didn't turn the game round or impact it in a defining way.
