They are caught between a rock and a hard place. Sending Messi to Coventry, yet still having to pay his mammoth salary and image rights, with ten months left remaining on his contract, makes zero financial sense.
Coupled with destroying his entire legacy, they would have no vehicle to make any actual cash off his back while holding him hostage to his registration.
The question is, what's the non-financial outcome they are trying to achieve? It's staying in post, presumably, which is why its important to them to be seen to have done everything to keep him.
But if he is going, they will want a) to appear to have been the good guys in this, screwed over by selfish money grabbing Messi/City and/or b) at least secure a mahoosive fee.
Their issue is that they are getting the worst of both worlds - they look like incompetent dicks, AND they're not getting much of a fee. And it's too late to do much about it now. It's been a massive financial and PR cock up by Barca.
