Four after Torres, but a slight hope for a very big and surprising fifth.
Slight hope is probably right. We seem afraid to really push the boat out for anyone. We try and tie up the player then squeeze the selling club on price. If we have competition for the players affections we walk away.
Our record suggests that our policy works pretty well, all the same there’s the nagging feeling that instead of strengthening after success we sit back. We then stagnate for a season before going aggressively after players again but we never play top dollar. I wonder have we left a league title or 2 behind by not buying Van Persie in 2011, full backs in Pep’s first season or of course not replacing Kompany last summer.
I hope this summer we start planning for a post Aguero future as the market will be as good as it will be for the foreseeable. Next season we’ll be buying in obvious desperation and be royally screwed in any deal. Buy now, save later but I have no real feeling that we will. Last season we were linked with both Maguire and Felix and balked at both.
Whether it’s Havertz, Kane, Martinez or Felix I can’t see us paying the market rate. We’ve competition for 2 of those or we’d need to pay a huge price to secure either if the others. We’re more likely to look for the next Jesus or hope that Sterling’s future is as a false 9.
Sooner or later we need to realise that sometimes you just have to pay the price. Madrid do it, United always do, Bayern when they have to, PSG always do, Liverpool did it last season and Barca do it when they have to. To keep dining at the top table, sometimes you have to pay high prices.
