Why were they the most important?

Why was Lyon more important than Real? If we'd lost vs. Real you never get to Lyon. And if we'd beaten Lyon, you'd have written that off as a meaningless game and complained we lost to Bayern.

Sounds like you only count losses as the most important games, in which case you'll never be satisfied with any defence.

Just to mention Real Madrid, where we kept them at arms length for most of the game, Benzema busted through Laporte & failed to score, a situation you would hardly ever see, with the 'old' Laporte or Benzema, who would usually score.

If Ake isn't playing on the right (and I doubt he will either) then absolutely we need to buy another central defender because Fernandinho isn't the answer and we can't rely on Stones any more.

We effectively have Ake and Laporte on the left and Garcia on the right, and then it looks bare. Not enough.
Isnt that why we are after another CB?

It's because players still think they can do what they used to do before. If Fernandinho plays in midfield he'll see opportunities he used to be able to do but get there a fraction of a second too late. The Southampton game away was a perfect example. He'll play most of the game after his first booking. I would be happier if we signed an athletic DM than a CB

I want both of those tbh, but it looks like it'll be a cb, for now, which would be a big bonus.

You would imagine Fern would have the brains to adapt his game to ageing legs though. Plenty of others have done so. He has played out of position for a season now so should now be used to a different way of thinking.

Aké isn't playing on the right of Laporte, I don't know why anyone thinks he would.

Our defence was an issue, and I can't believe I have to say this again, but you keep replying with the same thing because Laporte was injured for six months.

Why are you so sure Ake won’t play to the right of Laporte?

Don’t think we spent £40m on a utility player that will be a backup LB, backup CB and backup DM.

Laporte/Ake is better than Laporte/Stones, Laporte/Otamendi and Laporte/Fernandinho.

Pep played two right footed players as a CB pairing countless times.

Laporte/Ake is the partnership I would prefer against Wolves.

I'm hoping Ake can play there tbh.

I fear it will be Garcia.

Of course he could. Everyone knows Aké is our second best defender. This time around we won't fuck around with our backline. No way Garcia, Stones or Otamendi plays ahead of Aké, even on the right side. I just can't see it.

I count the games against decent opposition more than cannon fodder for sure. I hope Ake will improve things this season.
