I think if you apply one standard to our squad, then you have to apply it to EVERY position at EVERY one of our rivals.

So - who is Trent's back up? Robertson's? Who steps in if VVD gets injured? What about Salah, who steps in when he goes down? In all those positions you think they have better options than us? If not then why won't the fact they don't have 2 world class players in every position come back and haunt them?

All that isn't to say that I wouldn't also like a left back. The point is that there's a long way from "we could do with another specialist left back" to "we won't win the league because we don't have a specialist left back back up for Mendy".
I think is issue is nobody has faith in Mendy anymore due to his injury history and the toil those injuries have taken on him we are essentially starting yet another season where a cm will be playing more games at lb then our lb. Mendy should be our back up lb IMHO he is very inconsistent and I don't believe he is capable of playing every 5 days or so. Hope in wrong on both accounts.

Liverpool have Gomez, Van Dijk and Matip competing for 2 positions. As for Salah they’ve added Jota. TAA has Neco Williams as cover. Liverpool bought a Greek international left back. The replacements won’t be are at the same level but they do offer decent cover.

We have Mendy, who mostly due to injury, has failed to live up to expectations, and no other specialist. Zinchenko, Ake and Cancelo are all options but none are natural left backs.

The real issue is that our only left back hasn’t been consistently fit enough or performed well enough. The mistakes at Wolves and Chelsea last season were costly and he looked rusty at Wolves, ropey against Leicester, admittedly he wasn’t the only one. He was much better against Burnley but that has to be the norm for him or he will get targeted a lot this season.

Inside knowledge, no. I do feel easier for young academy lad, Doyle for instance, to replace the legs of ferny, than the guile of a more advanced Gundogan.

Perhaps but Fernandinho positioning and other qualities come from experience

You would think hard work was a minimum but how many players work as hard as Fernandinho ?

Neco fucking williams? How is that decent cover? He's bang average.

I'm hoping Ake & Cancelo (if he can learn how to defend) will be the other left backs, as we can't trust which Mendy will turn up, even when fit & Zinchenko is poor in both attack & defence.

That post fully proves my point about the massive double standards whereby we expect our squad to have two world class players in every position whilst we don't come close to applying that standard to our rivals.

Its been average window with many weaknesses and question marks remaining in the squad.

Only 1 LB in the squad, Rodri looks good against immobile teams but against mobile teams he seems exposed, Fernandinho is 35, Aguero's replacement in no sight.

We are also 1 body lighter in midfield compared to last season. Gundogan isn't really good enough for us either on top of this.

Zinchenko staying is another sign of making do with players who simply are not good enough.

Hopefully Dias is the perfect fit for us, but remains to be seen.
