I’d look on it more as a negotiating position rather than one they can realistically hold (even if upheld legally).

If Real Madrid or Bayern tapped Kun up, would we still cheerfully wave him goodbye with his lucky bag and carriage clock?

If it was the end of the season & he had an agreement he could leave ? Yes.

He & we might agree that we get something out of the deal, rather than him walking out, that would be upto him.

But it would be like us saying " nah fuck off Bayern give us 200 mil or you stay here".

Remember FFP.

€100m over 3 years is €33.3m per year through the books, it’s not a lot of money in regards to ffp. Wages he earns at Barça include image rights and other bonus’, he base rate will be nowhere near €1m a week, again all easily done for ffp.
So say we pay him £300k pw, then a cut of shirt sales, sponsorship incentives etc and he’d get the £500k pw easily.
Add to this city have inserted (allegedly) ‘Messi tax’ to every sponsorship deal (currently we have I think 42 sponsors) so we can renegotiate should we ever sign him. Companies like Puma, Etihad etc will increase a lot but let’s say £5m a year on those 2 alone, that’s an extra £10m a year, if the others upped it by just £1m that’s an extra income of £50m a year based just off Messi signing. That’s being conservative as well, it’s likely to be much more. That also doesn’t include other sponsors or endowment opportunities coming in.
So when you actually look at it then the numbers stack up and the deal isn’t outrageous at all, even €150-200m is doable in reality. But it’ll never go that high and all parties know it.
Oh... Add in that possibly the deal on offer is 3 years at City, 2 at NYCFC then they’ll be funding part of the deal meaning even less through our books. Maybe even none through our books if New York bought him and loaned him to us for 2-3 seasons. Theres always a legal way around these things and they are nowhere near as silly once you look at them in the context of ffp and how they are documented through the books.

No of course we wouldn't, as Aguero is under contract!

Also, if he wasn't, we would only get around £50 quid plus a bag of Salt & Vinegar crisps ;)

Totally agree.
Letting your star player going to one of your European rivals on a free is not something anyone would agree to liberally.
Barca are just trying to get the best they can out of the situation and their starting point is what I would expect.
It would be a different matter if Messi was going back to Argentina or the USA.
If City really want him they will agree to deal with Barca. Having to pay Barca may also help City in terms of having more reason to bring Messi’s salary closer in line to his team mates which could be beneficial for team spirit and future salary negotiations...

I’d like to think we would have handled it with more decorum. The way we treated Zab, Vinny and Merlin was exemplary. However, those guys were greatly diminished assets in comparison with Messi. They weren’t leaving to join rivals either. I believe 700 mill is an opening position in the hope of achieving a much lower, but still substantial, figure from a European rival with deep pockets.

I’m not applauding Barça, Morally, end of May meant “end of season“. But in a dog eat dog world, it’s easy to see where they are coming from.

Yes.

If sergio asked to leave, I would accept it and wish him my thanks amd all the best for his 10 years loyal service.

Whether he was tapped up would irrelevant and academic, he has earn't the right to ask to leave when he wants to now.

Also this is different, Messi has asked them to honour an agreement and let him leave, considering the last decade and his contribution to them the club and his loyalty to them, to turn on him is very much in the rags/scouse attitude

Yeah I can absolutely see where they coming from, they are screwing Messi for every cent, they could have spoken to him & he might have agreed along with City, to give Barca & token fee plus a player ot two.

Instead they are determined to rinse us for everything they can get & are basically just telling him to fuck off.

I can’t see how it helps anyone to sour the relationship possibly beyond repair. They’ll want him associated with the club in the future surely. Just let the man leave on his own terms. He’s 33 and he absolutely deserves it.
I think by the sounds of it, that’s what Messi is hoping. He’s contract says at the end of every season he can leave if he chooses, now he actually wants to they don’t want to let him.

And if Sergio left on a free to join the dippers or rags?

I‘d be surprised if we didn‘t have gentlemen’s agreements in place with our departing heroes that they don‘t join rival/hostile clubs.

I don't think they would if honest anyway.

I do think we have an agrrement that when they wish to go we will let them like we have with Zabba and Silva and never really pushed them to remain, we could ahve cashed in even when they had a year left if we wanted to be greedy like Barca but instead allowed them to leave at the end for free.

Just imagine this squad depth next season. Mind-blowing.

Just had a thought about this, if we were to bring in a left back would it be possible that Zinchenko could be a back up in midfield? I know people at the club like him and he seems a good lad and it might be a good way to play him somewhere more familiar to him

I think our departing heroes wouldn't go anywhere near those two shitstain clubs, no need to have a gentleman's agreement.
Yes, I think our position with these guys was exemplary...and well placed in their cases.

Is Ezzy now a busted flush??!!

I can actually only assume that Ezzy wanted outed
He could have guessed at 2 done deals thus week and got lucky.

but 6 in a week. That was simply never going to happen. When has it ever happened ?

he couldn’t evenhave got lucky.

Agree about the mediocre players but that was before the covid issue.

Messi is still the best but he's not superhuman, he is 33.

Realistically how long could he remain the best, in the premier league? 2 seasons tops?

If so, 100m plus players is far too great a sum, especially with wages on top and with 12 months remaining on his contract (not forgetting the can go free at the end of the season clause)

Two seasons of Messi is enough if it means winning the PL. We would be mad not to take a deal for 100-150m plus a player or two. Anyone who doubts Messi clearly has anagenda against him or just never seen him play.

Covid has barely made a difference to the
fees being currently paid.

We simply cannot pass on the opportunity to have the best player probably in the entire history of football, who is still the best currently.
