It's quite simple... he earns Barca a fuck load but they have spent it/are committed to a lot more than that so go further into debt regardless. We sign him and he brings in extra revenue. As long as we don't spunk that by buying Grealish for 300m and giving Aguero and Fernandinho 1m a week until they're 40 we are just better off.
So he earns Barca a load of money but because they're in debt, they should let him go for free? Either he's a good deal commercially or he's not - I'm happy to accept the argument either way, but he can't be a good deal commercially for us and a bad deal for a club with a far larger turnover

Messi sounds like a nightmare based on your description.I’m surprised you’re so upset we arent getting him in that case?
If they get 100m for him that’s outstanding business from Barca. Can’t see how keeping him is an option though. Imagine all the other players whit their talisman and captain not wanting to be there. The rot will spread deep

Not been an optimist but this is more on than at any point in this process, his fathers letter, his fax, his statement is damming, upsetting his family so strong was his beliefs, let down, club in a shambles etc etc etc, now a bid and Barca can grant his wish “reluctantly “
It’ll be interesting to see what response Messi gets from Barca, will they make an official statement in reply?

IF they do, we will soon see if they are opening the door to a bid, can’t see us bidding unless we know we are in with a shout.

Be interesting to see how this plays in Barcelona press. Are they rejoicing or is there an element of - this is wrong.
How as a fan can you be happy after what he's just said? i just keep thinking what if it was Aguero how would i feel!

Shit! thats how i would feel!!

Yes he can! Turnover is one thing, profit is another. Barca spunk all of their turnover and some hence the immense debt. He makes them a fortune but they spunk it all and more. If he comes to us and we don't spunk the revenue he makes us a bigger profit.

Just to add as I think I get what you mean now, it makes sense to secure a fee now to offset the loss in revenue from him leaving. Rather than let him leave for nada. Which is why they are fighting so hard to ensure he can't leave for free. But their debt means they can't improve the squad in the way Messi is demanding. It is a complete mess.

What, by paying him what they were paying him last season? Many on here think him coming to us was commercial genius, due to the revenue he'd bring in, but Barca keeping him is a bad decision? How does that work then?

Because they are dogshit, in huge debt & need to start again.
Now have Messi, not wanting to be there & a new manager having to deal with it all.

Swales.

Is that it? Seriously? It's game well and truly still on. He's leveraging his legacy and love of the club against them doing the right thing.

I think it is well and truly over. Another u-turn would be shambolic.

But then I've been consistently wrong here. Said he'd never leave, he announced he would. Said he didn't have a clause to walk, he claimed he did, said he wouldn't stick with it, he did. Said this is it he'll follow through no gokng back now, he fucking went back.

As a family man as are many on here I couldn't help but feel sad to hear how is eldest son begged him to not move to a new country and not change schools. These issues are sometimes forgotton and taken for granted amongst all football fans.

Personally, if I had all the money like he has and achieved what he has achieved then to upset my kids like that would be too difficult to do, just for a fresh challenge.

Then again I am a soft arse.

I was never enamoured with the idea of him being here; he's probably the greatest of all time but, in my guts, it would only ever have been a short term appointment and a bit of a circus - a stick to beat us with if we didn't win everything or the only reason we did win anything. I would prefer a younger, more 'under the radar' player who can add technique, pace and power to our central midfield.
