Tinpot theory time:

1) The original plan all along was to wait until the very last minute for Kane, or until Tottenham replaced him. Levy tends to sell eventually.
2) One week before the deadline we notice that we had a 'free' run at Ronaldo, and decided that it was far less of a risk to go for him.
3) We tell Kane and Tottenham we're no longer interested.
4) We move for Ronaldo, everything's set to happen.
5) United + pride = No Ronaldo
6) Back to step 1!

If City had decided that we didn’t want a striker this summer because Delap was our man, I reckon 90% of City fans would buy into/love it. However, it will be a square pegs/round holes job with the likes of Sterling, Torres, KDB, Bernardo taking it in turns. It has worked before and it can work again but it clearly wasn’t the plan for this season. We have failed miserably in the transfer market and not giving the best manager we have ever had, or ever likely to have, the tools to do his job is fucking criminal.

Just said on CBS Sports that the Ronaldo camp thought City were not all in on wanting the player .... whereas Utd were but only after finding out about City talking to his agent ...

Mendes played a blinder for Ronaldo. I fully believe that had City not been at the table, neither would United. United would have quite happily let him go any club in Europe but to City.

With that in mind, City should really be questioning dealing with Mendes in future.
