Messi was the one we missed. Got played by Levy with the time it took.
From the start, Levy was clear that he did not want to sell Kane. That we pursued Kane regardless - a player with - I think - 3 years left on his contract and thus with virtually no leverage to force a trade - is at best... unexpected?

Put in the best possible light - Pep wanted Kane because Pep values him as a player and Kane stated that he wants to play for us. So management aggressively pursued him. At the same time, we played extremely well without a top striker last season - so perhaps Pep and management thought that worst case the Kane deal falls through - disappointing but not hugely so.

Notwithstanding, an outsider observer, looking at how the Kane negotiations proceeded - might well view the entire episode as a fool's errand.

Frankly I'm not sure which view is correct.

We should have filled our boots like PSG did this summer! Makes the chairman’s interview look very silky as it stands.

Pretty mature reply that. We went after a player who wasn't going to be sold at all (as confirmed by Pep). Do we need a striker? Yes. Can we do without one? Yes, but it's making Peps job tougher isn't it? Weren't we supposed to replace Aguero? I am not going on a rant against the management, but no harm in accepting that our striker pursuit wasn't ideal at all.
It was all I could muster at your pathetic attempt at a wind up.

I think we’ve all got so used to success with the seasons we have had that there’s a expectation of silverware or competing for the league I’m guilty of that. But you can’t win/compete every season.

Think we should just look at this season with no expectations and what happens happens, hopefully we can go far in a cup competition maybe.at least we are not Arsenal

I think that isn’t far off. Pep wanted Kane for his team. If they couldn’t get Kane he maybe didn’t see anyone else available that improved his team. Team being the all important thing., there may be other strikers available that were better individually than what we had , but not better for his team.
So we were happy to go all in for Kane, because there was nobody we wanted or available that we were risking losing out on.
Now that’s done they might or might not look for a younger option that fits even if they aren’t ready to go straight in and need a bit of work. Or they might wait and see who is available next summer.
