I think if a poster came to this forum about two seasons ago and claimed that he heard from a “top source” at the club that Pep wanted to go into a new season with Ederson as the only goalkeeper in our squad, because, if needed be, we had Kyle Walker for that position who had proven to work, some would have believed — and agreed with the thesis

That's a moronic argument.

If Kyle walker had played 20 games in net like the various midfielders have played false 9 then that comparison would have validity.

No my friend, the moronic argument is the one being made in the other direction, because it’s about giving away a tactical shortcut and treating it as the main course. Assuming Pep would be this silly is the exact same in both instances

It is very unlikely we let Aguero go and don't bring in a like for like replacement but it is certainly not impossible.

Should we win the CL this season with KDB playing false 9 in every game it is possible that Pep would be happy with having Jesus and KDB as first choice options.

The chances are <10% but it's infinitely more likely than the Walker comparison.

I would say it is definitely impossible that Pep would accept starting a new season with less attacking options than we already have (and they are limited). And when you mention Kevin as false 9 as a first choice attacking option, it sounds even more absurd. Not only because Kevin is injury prone, but because Pep’s own career shows that there is a limit to how far you can go before becoming predictable and easily exposed with this choice and we’re getting there. You will see a lot less false 9s next season, not more

I don't think the point needs flogged to death. Yes most agree that it is damn unlikely we wouldn't be in for a striker, with sergio leaving. Rascal himself probably thinks that for the best part, I doubt there was anything but honest sharing in that. He could have come and said the same source said itnwas nailed on we sign Haaland, and many would still consider it with a good measure of caution.

We get it, it isn't logical or likely.

But bloody hell, it isn't as impossible and as insane to merit going on about it. And it is nothing like going in with Walker as a backup keeper ffs, that is just silly.

I’d have thought Pep extending had at least as much influence.
He “only” has 2 years left after the end of this season compared to 1 year left last season, so not significant. And im sure the board would allow him to leave any time (within reason) if he wanted to.
I suggest a change in Peps mindset to being open and enthused by a rejuvenation and hence a long term development of new players may be more relevant.

Tell you what this is the kinda deal we’d love...

This is something we have nothing to worry about. This guy right now can’t make the starting XI of a struggling Benfica team. When he plays, his performances are beyond mediocre and underwhelming. For that price, they will find no team crazy enough to take the gamble. Furthermore, a couple of months ago a Benfica fan sent me an interview by his agent in which he says Nunez has no plans of leaving that club in the next two season — which is the smart move. Maybe an option for the future, certainly not for now.

edit: here’s the interview: https://www.noticiasaominuto.com/de...-darwin-nunez-quer-ficar-dois-anos-no-benfica He says the player would only consider a move after next season

Do you not think Kevin will play there against Dortmund?

He certainly looks first choice in the position currently.

That’s not what I was referring to. I was talking about next season, which is what you were talking about. He might play against Dortmund, but if we go through, I doubt we’d play Kevin The False 9 against Bayern or PSG
