Man City's Jack Grealish transfer record has the hypocrites raging again
Aston Villa fans are understandably upset but some of the reaction to Manchester City has been laughable.
Part of the fun about being a Manchester City fan these days must be seeing just how much outrage the club generates, simply for doing what other clubs have been doing for years.
And as the Blues stand on the verge of breaking the British transfer record - for the first time in 13 years and only the second time in their history - the levels of criticism and anger are about to reach boiling point.
Aston Villa fans are understandably upset at the prospect of losing Jack Grealish, their best player and a Brummie who they hoped would place his love for the club above his ambition to win major trophies and play on the biggest stage.
Genuine supporters will be hurt by the player’s apparent decision to go, and City fans will have sympathy for that viewpoint - losing a favourite player is tough, as Blues found out when Shaun Wright-Phillips was head-hunted by bigger, more powerful Chelsea in 2005.
But Wright-Phillips went with the blessing of all rational City supporters - they understood his motives, and he was welcomed back with open arms when the move did not work out for him.
You would like to think most Villa fans feel the same way about Grealish. But the hilarious fan who was filmed pleading with Grealish not to leave to join “a club that was only formed ten years ago” deserves no sympath
