Jack Wilshere

If this kind of player plays for your club, you love it, while all the other clubs hate it. Wilshere for Arsenal. Zaba for us. Joey when he played for us before he pushed too far. Van Persie for the scum. He's passionate, and I think that is good in a player.

Understand the Joey comparison but can't see the Zaba one. Zaba comes across as a very diplomatic professional - passionate, but doesn't often appear to rub opponents up the wrong way, and you don't hear a word against him off the pitch.

Wilshere is more of the rent a quote type, constantly stirring things up. In his favour he only turned 21 a couple of weeks ago, and being stupid is a lot more common at that age than it is at 28. Hopefully he'll calm down and not still be a dick like Barton.

The Wilshire myth continues to gather momentum, thanks in no small part to his continued supply of honest-Jack ("we gotta all work harder for the fans") quotes to the media. Its a similar story on the pitch, with his arm waving bluster and occasional reckless tackle. The stats (OPTA) betray the facts: his ranking among premiership midfielders this season is as follows: assists (77th - one all season), chances created (57th), successful passes (48th), final-third passes (86th), tackles won (100th - 14 all season), tackle win-rate (145th), interceptions (95th). He is not fast, his judgement is often poor. He is a keen young player who should improve, but the facts do not support the  myth surrounding his current importance....

Stats don't mean everything but I thought he'd be up there

I'd have walcott before wilshere every time.

Surely got to be a joke? Wilshere is the only English player that could rival a top Spanish player. If he stays injury free he'll be world class in a couple of years. I wouldn't be surprised if he ended up at Barcelona one day, that's how good he could be. Don't forget he only turned 21 a couple of weeks ago.

Bloody hell mate - I'll have some of whatever you're on!
The implication from what you say is that Jack's a young Fabregas or Iniesta in the making. I've seen absolutely nothing to show that he's anything other than a box to box midfielder, with a bit more aggression than most of his age, and a potential 'leader.' He has no great pace, isn't renowned for dribbling skills, doesn't play incredible long passes, and he's scored very few goals in his career to date.
Maybe I've been watching the wrong player - certainly not the same one you've alluded to.

He's far more than a standard box to box midfielder. People forget that he's just had 18 months out of the game which has harmed his development. Before his injury he was rightly getting huge plaudits and was well on the way to being a world class midfielder and he was only 19. How many other 19 year olds become regulars at a top team, to the extent where they're seriously missed when out with an injury? I can't think of many. Lampard and Gerard only got established in their early 20's.

How many times have you watched him though properly? I first saw him play in an Arsenal reserve match years ago and have kept a close eye on him ever since. His ball control and vision is on the same level as how the spaniards play. He might not light up a game in the way a top striker or Messi does, but he isn't that type of player. Xavi doesn't light up a game like Messi does but it doesn't mean he's not a top drawer player.

I guess we'll only see in time how he develops. If he stays injury free though he will become a world class midfielder within time imo.
