James McAtee | Agreement with Forest - £30m overall

I’ve been watching James since his very first appearance in the first team. For me, three or four years ago, he was playing better football than he is now. His game back then felt more fluid, and he moved around the pitch much more.

Last season, I noticed that he didn’t seem to be enjoying his football as much and for some reason, he seems a bit lost in transition. Things just haven’t worked out as well for him lately.

I hope he finds his form again and wishing him all the best.

Hugo Viana is doing a fantastic job with transfers so far; getting both Cherki and Reijnders for about the same as rag scum wasted on Hojlund, getting Trafford back and now a great fee for McAtee.

Guess his problem is that he doesn’t really have a position. He’s supremely talented, but hasn’t shown the mental aptitude to make it with us as of yet.

If he rips up trees at Forest, we have a buy back clause. We’ve got a very decent fee too for a player that was never going to displace Foden, Cherki and the other deeper forward players.

Good luck James. Hope you find your mojo and smash it.

Well, he couldn't get minutes from Pep last year when we were “shit” and had injuries right, left and centre (especially in midfield). With the additions we've made, there was no way he was going to get more minutes, probably less. This is a fair deal, all round. A fair price, I think, given what he's shown so far. And good for the lad. I still think we're letting a goodish player go. Just not City good. Not that level.
Like others, I'm slightly worried (for him) about him fitting in at Forest. I saw very little evidence that the type of football he plays is the type they play (or played last season). I don't quite see him lumping long balls up to Chris Wood, somehow. Well, perhaps he can change. Or they can.

We’re meant to be evolving our style this year to be more possession based. We were a one trick pony last season and eventually got found out. The signings we’re trying to make and our pre season games seem to be reflecting that we’ll be changing. We’ll see…

It looks like a good fee at first, and clauses probably boost it to be a good overall deal.

However, given the fees that have just been agreed for Hutchinson and Ouattara, it’s not that staggering. Neither of them should be worth more than McAtee (obviously, length of contract may play some part though).

The fees for Ouattara and Hutchinson are insane. Neither have any sort of record of achievement in the top flight or the sort of long standing, universally acknowledged potential of McAtee.

Ouattara has had 2.5 years in the PL and 1 pretty decent season last season. 3 years left on his contract. Rotational first team player.

Hutchinson has had 1 year in the PL and 2 proper seasons of football. However, he is Ipswich's best player and has 5 years left on his contract.

McAtee has about 2.5 years of proper football, 1.5 in the PL (last season was like half a season really). However, he's in his last year of his contract and clubs know we don't need him.

So I think with context, it's pretty clear to see why he costs less than those 2. Add in the sell on clause and the buyback which would have reduced the price further but it could end up netting us £34m+ (total) down the line depending on the sell on percentage.

I’m trying to think if we have any other players in the squad about whom you could also say “he doesn’t really have a position”?

I think all players have positions, it’s just a question of whether, even though supremely talented, they perhaps, unfortunately for them, aren’t quite as supremely talented as some of the other players we are lucky enough to have in those positions. If you think about where this team sits in the English/European football hierarchy for want of a better word, and the expectations at the club now that go along with that, there’s absolutely no shame whatsoever in not being quite there for us.

As everyone else has said, good luck James.
