I'll have that, but Barca are Barca and they are the biggest name in football. As quickly as we are growing in world football I don't quite think we are at their level just yet, despite the fact that I wouldn't swap their squad for ours. Neymar is a cash cow for his Dad and it's starting to look like they've possibly used PSG to circumnavigate a move to real, with some the deal stinking from the outset. I think our ace card in any deal for Umtiti would be the club harmony and the fact that everything is running smoothly under the stewardship of Europe's best coach.
Honestly our ace card is pep

Didn't work for Alves or vvd
Not very good examples. PSG offered Alves double the wages and his wife/SO wanted to start her own business in Paris which basically sealed the deal. I don't think any coach in the world can convince a player to join a club when his wife wants to live somewhere else lol.

We're late to the VVD party. There are two very important things here. Firstly, Pep doesn't rate VVD as much as Stones. If this weren't true, we would have bought VVD in 2016 instead of Stones. Especially when VVD was coming off an incredible season with Southampton and Stones had a poor season with Everton. Secondly, throughout that season, Klopp was in VVD's ear and eventually met with him in Blackpool in early 2017 to discuss his role in the team. When we actually reached out VVD around May/June, we were told that it was too late. This was similar to Mendy who had already made up his mind to join Pep, so much so that when Juve came calling, Monaco told them that it was too late.

Got to trust him but why would anyone not rate him as highly as Stones - besides we need 2 top quality CB's and it's been obvious for a while Vinny is struggling.

Because rating a player simply on talent is different from all the considerations you have to undergo to determine who you should get.

You can rate multiple players at a position all equally as highly but you cant go after all of them.

So I assume after considering the following, John might have struck him as the better option to pursue.

1. John was equally as talented and fit Pep's style
2. John was younger, so likely easier to mould and a longer term service potential..
3. John is Englsh and Pep likes a core of players from the home league.

Now these are just my guesses, there could be a myriad of other reasons I or others aren't privy to.

Man City have made contact with Freiburg about Calgar Soyuncu, the defender’s advisor told Radio Spor. #SCF #MCFC

Looks like the agent's attempt to bring more attention to his client.

The news from Feb, 2017:
"The Turkish defender has been identified as a target by Pep Guardiola and the star’s agent confirmed earlier this week that City had been in contact over a move.
'Caglar is the type of defender that suits Pep Guardiola’s style and his goal is to play Premier League football but he is focused on Freiburg until the end of the season.’"
