Last year Chelsea at home and Liverpool & Leicester away spring to mind - critical games we lost due to no pace at the back! (guessing Kompany wasn't fit for either game)

The main goal of the high defensive line is to reduce the spaces and make attacking team more compact. It's done to make pressing possible. Pep's 'high' pressing and deep def. line are mutually exclusive.
