Javi Martinez

Who would you like us to sign?

I'm not against signing him. My point was that I see him as a cover/backup/squad player and not as a player that will improve us enormously, unlike some here.

For CDM I would like to have signed Fabinho or Kimmich, both of which could have covered at RB. But these would obviously not have been squad players.

This is nothing like Alves. Alves seems to have had a clause that allowed him to terminate his contract. What would have been the point of Juve fighting against him?

If you think Bayern will immediately sell anyone who who questions whether they want to stay at the club then surely they would have made it known that he wanted to leave.

Ancelotti is no fool. If he saw real talents in the player then he would make room for him in his system.

Not everyone has to jump for joy at every signing that we make. I'm sure you also celebrated the arrival of Nolito, Fernando, Mangala and the others. Judge a player on their qualities and not on whether they are willing to don a blue shirt.
Oh hell this is just bad.I agree with you ! Now there`s a novelty. ;)

It looks this summer like we're adding 4 new starters, GK, LB, RB & Bernardo. I think next summer we'll see the midfield reinforcements of the level you're talking about.
Regards Martinez, he provides a very good option in two positions, Kimmich or Fabinho would do the same.
I don't think there's an obvious centre back or centre mid out there currently that would drastically improve us that would be available.

Bayern are bringing in Sule and other of the best young defenders in the bundesliga and shipping out deadwood, my concern is the injury history, I see this as a risky move

Great player but i doubt Bayern are selling in all fairness being a big part of there team last season.

Ahead of Kompany - probably no. Ahead of Ota - definitely yes. But have to say that I don't rate Otamendi at all and would be happy if he leaves.
Would be glad to see Stones-Martinez, Kompany-Martinez or Stones-Kompany pairs this season.
Most premier league XI's based on stats had otamendi in there believe it or not. I thought he looked really good when playing alongside Kompany and think he's underrated.

Anyone could see last season that we abandoned the high press as it simply doesn't/didn't work in the Prem. Pep made reference to a change of approach as other teams were visably happy to launch the ball upfield.

My guess: Pep realised his players' deficiencies - we couldn't hold the ball well enough and conceded too much counters. If you do that too often, it becomes impossible to use energitic pressing as you're quickly running out of steam (remember how poorly we played in second halves at the start of the season?).
Now we seem to be fixing this problem - B.Silva's acquisition is the most telling (and most needed) transfer for me. Possible adding of Alexis, who is a good ball-retainer, also confirms that direction of our tactical development.
As for FBs: the adding of powerful athletic fullbacks is a must [especially] for high-line, pressing-based system as they'd need to cover vast spaces while pressing. I wouldn'be surprised to see Mendy in a 'hybrid' CB/LCB role if he signs for us.

We may disagree, but it's always pleasant to read an educated response ;)
