Jeff Whitley

I remember his debut v Barnsley, he was only seventeen, but he was here for so long it is scarcely believable he is still only 32. (and I didn't mention the back pass -oops).

I remember his early games also. One particular game where he scored a cracker got onto the back pages with his age quoted, 17. He and Micheal Brown used to be in digs somewhere near Bramall Lane in Stockport and used to drink in the Jolly Sailor on Bramall Lane.

Soon after the game in which he scored, they went into the Jolly Sailor for a drink only to be barred by the landlord as he now new his age due to it being in the papers.

Suppose that was the downside of his moment of fame.

Now I know why he was poor, ciggies and beer dont work kids when your a footballer, astonished he only 32,even more astonished he played for us that many times....jesus how times have changed

I knew Jeff well when he was at city, he lived with Michael Brown back then and the two together were a right pair. Be under no illusion the drinking culture was rife then and I spent many a night back at their house until the wee hours.
It was common place for the players to attend supporters club nights and be showered with drinks etc.
I honestly believe the temptation to perform and be one of the lads etc is harder for the younger players and they should be kept well away from the kind of temptations they were constantly asked to attend.
Every time we would attend a do etc it would lead to nightclubs and partying the night away.
I can recall many escapades etc on the eve of big games for City and the u21s and without doubt they hindered the career of a few back then.
Good luck Jeff.

I do not mean to trivalise his situation and I wish him well

But he was a disappointment for me in a very specific way........

I share the same surname and at the time Kinky was playing - I was desperately tracking the papers every weekend for some clip that stood out about Whitley scores for CITY, Whitley sets up Kinkladze winner for CITY and so on.............to frame and put on the wall - sad I know

I did not find one!!

I had the pleasure of meeting Jeff recently,he was at a childrens party for one of the toddlers out of my daughters play group, the father of wich owns the stockport car supermarket where Jeff has been working. He knew i am a big blue and told me Jeff would be coming,my mrs got all giddy for me and started saying things like 'oooh what you gonna say to him and, do you want me to get a photo of you and Jeff'!! i said look he's with his mrs and kids and probably doesnt want to be mithered by some City groupie, wich was what it seems my mrs thought i was! Any how i was introduced to jeff as 'hey jeff come and meet stu he's a big blue' i felt a bit of a tit to be honest,he came over shook my hand and had a quick exchange of words about city before getting back to his mrs and kids, bit later on he came back over sat down with me and the other half and openly spoke about his time at City, including a few funny stories of their antics during the dark days in div 2,also told me about how he helps out at other football clubs with the younger players and thing,he even bought us a coffee lol,it was a real pleasure and i for one cant speek highly enough of the lad.good luck Jeff..

'King rat' as Kevin Keegan used to call him
wasnt the best but always gave his all
one of my favorite moments from whitley was when a Norwich player choppped him down and it kicked off a bit and Jim ran about 30 yards (prob the quickest he moved) and jumped in to look after his kid brother

hope he gets back on track sounds like hes doing a lot of good too so fair play to him

I have checked Wiki about 4 times now, did someone say 32, staggering i really forgot how young he was when he went to Sunderland, good luck Jeff we both used to be Heald Greenonians, not many there had a hot tub in the garden

I just asked my mate to guess how old he is now, he said about 42, wouldnt mind he bought a car off Jeff a few months back
