He was playing the long con. Saying just enough positive remarks to hide the bitter jealousy that consumed him.

I am willing to bet that Jimbo has used the term ‘emptyhad’ many times in his personal life to degrade city to his scouse/rags mates. He was caught out. I am not a fan but you go ahead and enjoy his false praise.
