Jim Cassell

Heard from someone who was close to the youth squad that the kids never forgave Hughes for sacking Cassell and they hated Hughes because he never took the time to learn any of their names and never showed any intrest in the youth squad, Was told a few months ago that ever since Mancini has come in they seem a lot happier now and that Mancini is always talking to and giving advice to the young lads and tends to watch them play as well.

and had found the dimond "Boyata"

In the Garry Cook thread, daveduke67 said that there was concern at City that, whereas Arsenal & Barca regularly produced top-class internationals, at City 39 kids had played for first team after coming through the system but only one of these was currently an established international.

Jim Cassell is an extremely nice man and was fine for where we were but we need to push on. Where is our Fabregas, Iniesta, Wilshere, Rooney, Bale, etc? That's what the fall-out between Hughes and Cassell was all about. MH felt strongly that the youth players weren't being properly prepared for life in the Premiership and, more importantly, the owners backed him up.

Thats not a fair comparison who do you think a highly talented kid is going to sign for. Manchester city when we're near the relegation zone every year and possibly wont even be in the premiership anymore. Or Arsenal or Barca regular Champions league teams that can offer you so much more.

A kid will sign for a club where he thinks he will make it as a professional footballer, wining leagues, champions leagues etc those thoughts come later, walking before running

I think thats much too simple a view, the issue with having a youth set up is, in large part the players you produce are reflected in the talent you can draw and when you consider even the guys like John Guidetti have been at the club since Sven was here and the Manchester based players even longer. As a result the standard of talent will lag a number of years behind success on the field(at first team level), because hand on heart if you where a kid in the Manchester/Liverpool area 8 or so years ago and you didnt have any real loyalty to any of the clubs would you have picked City?
The reason Aresnal and Barca regularly produce top-class internationals is because they are successful and they have a history of producing top-class internationals, thus the more highly rated talent will sign with them over others. 20-30 years ago players might slip under the radar of major clubs, but these days I bet there are very few players that suddenly produce out of the blue at youth level, so its less down to scouting and more down to putting an attractive package together.

Why have West Ham produced Frank Lampard, Joe Cole, Rio Ferdinand, Jermaine Defoe, John Terry, Michael Carrick and Glen Johnson. They have been a mid table premier league side at the very best and a constant relegation battler for more or less every season.

The fact is, a club the size of Manchester City can attract the top local talent, the fact that we haven't produced a Lampard, Ferdinand or Cole in all that time means something has to change, even Everton who have had similar lack of success and constant relegation battles have produced top talent. Jim Cassell did a wonderful job with us and we have so much to thank him for and he will go down as a top man at this club in future years but then so did Joe Royle and like Royle when we moved onto the next level with Keegan we have now moved onto the next level with the new guys in charge.

City's academy produced plenty of good quality premier league players under jim, how about the likes of wright-phillips, richards, michael johnson, nedum, glen whelan.

Jim did a great job at our academy and is wasted where he is now
