Jimmy Carr

I tried to respond with an offensive joke of the same construct but seems like C-3PO has said NO. Never mind.

Can't use jokes to make a point in a thread about comedy. Doesn't this prove why blokes with clipboards watching stand up would be a bad thing?
I think the problem was you made a rather disgusting joke without any obvious context which goes against site rules.

PM me if you want to discuss it further.

Read his column then.

Unless that's also in character. Which it is.

In which case you've created a scenario where his comedy is never actually a critique or comment on anything, it's just "a character" so no one can ever actually point to anything he says ever, so bringing him up to defend Carr was also worthless.

Playing a character here too.

It’s meta comedy, which is the dominant theme of his act. It may be a criticism and expressing sentiments of genuine beliefs. But the purpose of his column is comedy not comedy critique, so it has limited value when you are using it for that purpose.

The problem isn't about context, it's that ending a segment about how funny it is that Romani got slaughtered by saying "see I'm being educational because a lot of people don't know about it" doesn't take away from the fact your audience spent the last minute laughing about how funny it is Romani got slaughtered because no one likes gypsies.

But that was the underlying point of the joke. There is a prejudice that exists towards the traveller community because the education system does not represent them.

I can fully understand how the joke is viewed as offensive and I don’t think it is funny either.

However, I think the joke is misguided rather than malicious.

Ironically, possibly, yes.

Particularly if it was in a room with predominantly arsenal fans. Not saying that is right, just quite possible.
See, I get your perspective. But based on my experiences here I don't think any amount of context would have the Bluemoon Forum ok about a racist uneducated rant on City comedic or otherwise. In my opinion of course.

Being offensive for the sole purpose of being offensive would not be funny to most people and would only be acceptable to individuals who sympathised with Nilsen and Sutcliffe rather than their victims and their families.

Yes, the routine which spends 10 minutes taking the piss out of other comedians for thinking they're saying the unsayable.

Why exactly did you ask me if this had occurred on stage or in print? You think he's not taking the piss out of comics in one of them?

But you asked for print and seem to think only his words off stage count as his opinion so here you go.

Because his entire on-stage persona is that of a bitter stand up comic who thinks he's better than his audience and looks down on other comedians and types of comedy. Do you believe he actually thinks Michael McIntyre is shit?

Here is what he said when Kirsty Young confronted Michael McIntyre with the 'fact' that Stewart Lee hates him.

"I wasn’t being interviewed. I was in character. Context, Kirsty Young, you are better than this."

So your evidence is a routine delivered in character, and an article that I've looked up and doesn't mention Jimmy Carr once.

You're the one who brought up Stewart Lee in character to defend Jimmy Carr ffs you cretin.

You cannot decide to use Stewart Lee quotes only work when you quote and agree with them and if you don't agree with them, then it's not real he's in character.

That wasn't the underlying point of the joke, that was the justification of the joke after saying it.

Those aren't the same thing.

So just so I understand your perspective, if Alan Davies had gone on stage as part of his tour and said verbatim what he said on the podcast, the reaction would have been notably different (specifically it would have been taken in good spirits)?
Well that's a stupid hypothetical, because you're asking me to imagine that a pre-written stand up show that has been honed over months would have the same words and delivery as an off-the-cuff rant on a podcast. Alan Davies is a good enough comedian to be able to, for example, put some actual jokes in the rant if he was writing it.

But let's imagine that it does appear word-for-word with identical delivery in a stand up show, then it would likely be surrounded by the sort of context that would make it clear that we're supposed to be laughing at this bitter Arsenal fan as a tragic figure, not agreeing with him.

Sorry I didn't realize you meant to a bluemoon audience.
