Jimmy Carr

It's not about being "easily offended" or being a snowflake. Of course we've all laughed at jokes we probably shouldn't have in the past but there are some things that aren't suitable to joke about and that's one of them.

Let's recast that "joke" to a different context. "Yeah the famine in Afghanistan/war in Syria (or Yemen) is terrible but at least there's fewer Muslims". Or "Yeah, slavery was awful but at least there were fewer black people to migrate from Africa". Or even the joke he told, but substituting Jews for Roma. He'd probably be prosecuted under Hate Speech laws and, if he'd said the first one, he'd probably be under armed guard for the rest of his life.

Between 200,000 and 300,000 Roma and Sinti people were murdered during the Holocaust. The night that the so-called Gypsy Camp in Birkenau was liquidated, in early August 1944, was apparently one of the most horrific, even in a place where unimaginable horror was a daily occurrence.

To think that Carr is effectively saying that a whole group of people who, due to the parents they were born to, aren't worthy of life, or that it's quite acceptable to murder them is completely off the scale. It's ot "edgy" and is far, far worse than suggesting young, healthy people don't need the vaccine.

No count we'll get the usual mealy-mouthed "I'm sorry if I offended anyone" apology. The problem is that the people it most offended were gassed and reduced to ashes over 75 years ago.
Perhaps someone needs to come up with the definitive list of what topics a comedian is and isn’t allowed to use.

Also worth pointing out that post war Roma and Sinti people were still persecuted. They were the only group not entitled to any restitution from the German government because they were not accepted as a race. It wasn’t until the late 70s they got the same recognition as other victims.

Even now (or in 2017) Jewish holocaust survivors in Moldova were getting €350 a month as restitution from the German government and their Roma counterparts were getting €15

From reading the reaction from the Roma community, it seems like this is one of the most hurtful aspects of the joke - they feel they are the last acceptable target. Carr wouldn’t have said it about Jews, or Gay people, or the disabled, but joking about Romani being murdered in their hundreds of thousands is still fair game.

That’s what’s going on right now.

Comedian makes a joke, public outrage at it being over the line, the line is redrawn.

That’s how we got from Al Jolson blacked up telling all sorts of racist and misogynistic shite to where we are now.

That's a really good way of summarising why people are going to be upset, which in my opinion is something more people need to be aware of when commenting on stuff like this.

However I doubt he'll apologise considering he was knowingly offensive.

His shows would be really long if each joke had to be broken down into the different ways the audience could interpret them.

If they do, I'm pretty sure mocking a group of people murdered on an industrial scale because of who they were, or the lives they led, would be on the "Avoid at all costs" list.

I'm staggered (but probably shouldn't be surprised) that people don't understand this.

I don’t think anything should be off limits in comedy, especially where you’ve bought tickets for a show where you know your limits may be challenged.

You do.
