Jimmy Carr

the show was on Netflix from December. I think any genuine offence would have been caused / taken some time ago so I suspect those behind the sudden outrage now have their own motives.

What do you think those are, out of interes.

Bear in mind I honestly have no idea where or how the reaction snowball (no link to snowflakery) actually started.

Thing with carr and many comedians on telly is they do their watered down versions of the act and people like them, buy a gig ticket, get jimmy doing his normal offensive stand up and then flounce

Was always so .... I recall seeing a video in the 80's, of cuddly all round family entertainer, Bob Monkhouse doing his stand up in a club. A very different beast.

I agree, it does seem like a weak move, and with Jimmy Carr nothing will come of it like we saw with Alan Davies recently.

Hugely different things. Carr's joke was deliberately provocative in a context where everyone watching had signed up to hear offensive things. Davies was a slip of the mask on a forum where he usually milks his nice-guy persona to the max. And fundamentally I feel safe betting that Carr doesn't actually believe murdering travellers is a good thing whereas Davies pretty clearly did genuinely feel that our owners should fuck off back to the desert.

Jimmy Carr knew that when he said that line, people would laugh, people would cheer. He wouldn't have said it if he wasn't confident it would get a good reaction. That's interesting to me. And as some people have suggested what would happen if a different racial group were substituted in- rightly or wrongly, I can't imagine he would ever do that because it wouldn't get the same reaction.

It's fine if people think it was a shit joke, or offensive, whatever. It's even fine to say that the joke was racist. When I see people on Twitter labelling him "racist Jimmy Carr" I think they're being deliberately obtuse. You'd have to be thick to not understand that he doesn't actually hold these views.

It’s a joke about “Pikeys”. It’s the same joke repeatedly made in the film Snatch that “people don’t like/hate Pikeys”.

You can find it funny or offensive or PB can get sand in his vagina and people can handwring all they want (as is their right). Carr makes 100 one liner jokes in a show. He jokes about sex, about obesity, race, rape and just about every subject. If people don’t like him or are offended then they don’t have to watch him.
Tell you what Sam. Why don't you go on the thread about the Munich Air Disaster and make a joke about that and how it meant fewer united players. Or find a thread about Hillsborough and do the same about Liverpool fans.

I'm sure there are some who would find it funny and therefore that'd make it OK. But knowing you, and knowing you're a very intelligent guy, I'm pretty sure you won't, because you know it would be in extremely poor taste.

But if you do decide to do it, let us you you're doing it so we don't read it accidentally and get offended.

Same here - no idea what/who started it (beyond Carr). As for the motivation, also no idea but I think genuine offence may have been caused back in December when the Netflix show aired. There is an issue around the stereotyping of travellers - try raising the issue of local fly-tipping, or a sudden outbreak of house/car crime among any random group of blokes and they will be trotted out. While it may not be helpful, I think Carr is as much taking the piss out of these lazy stereotypes as the travellers.

Context though isn't it? I doubt Carr would make the same jokes on TV.

Carr making the joke at one of his shows is not the equivalent of posting an offensive joke on a commemorative thread regarding Munich or Hillsborough, but you already know this.

If Carr had been doing his show at Auschwitz or on a Holocaust memorial post, you’d have more of an equivalence.

People should be able to comment freely on 2 clubs marketing and exploitation of the dead brand management campaigns because that's all either event is used for these days with a free pass from the media.

At the end of the day, who are you actually getting offended on behalf of?
