Jimmy Savile

I heard specifics about his behaviour from a Bulmers cider rep at a trade show in Washington, Tyne and Wear in 1995! Hard to imagine those at the top weren’t also subject to the gossip. Gossip can’t ever be enough to condem someone, though, surely.

Surely, as City fans we have to accept that.
I dated a nurse back in the late 80's and was told that he was a bit gropey and creepy. This was from contacts at Stoke Mandeville. I, like most others, didn't suspect anything like the horrors that he perpetrated though.

Notwithstanding all the friends in high places, it’s still incredible he got away with it for the whole of his lifetime, given the extent of it.

A doctor dating a nurse - that’s original!

Maybe she wasn't a real nurse. The other option is that I am not a....I've said too much.

As to hiding in plain sight, I wonder if it's because one just cannot believe anybody would do those sort of things. That only happens elsewhere.

What surprised me about the creep was the news that he never had an agent, manager or
accountant, he controlled every single facet of his life, put this with never having any girlfriends,
or friends that he could mention and the picture emerges. All arranged to ensure he could operate without any scrutiny, if nobody is close to you, you can get away with most stuff, and he did.

I’m too young to have grown up when he was relevant but how could anyone look at Jimmy Savile and not think “that guy is a massive nonce”.

He literally looked like a cartoon pedeophile, I’ve never been able to wrap my head around it.

Different era. There was no social media around so the TV and newspapers were your only news source. They fed people a picture they wanted you to see. The closest to people having their say was radio phone ins and they were predominantly on local radio. Lots of people probably thought he was an odd bod but hey there he was running marathons for charity, volunteering as a hospital porter, having tea with the Queen and police inspectors. He must be a decent bloke then surely? Also back then people put those in authority and TV on a pedestal. They were beyond reproach. Hard to believe looking back but that's how it was

There's plenty of well known eccentric celebrities who looks a bit oddball'ish - doesn't automatically make them a peado

What more effective way to hide in plain sight than act, look and dress like a nonce?

When the story broke back in 2012, I remember me and some friends all saying this, and my parents just not seeing it.

I think to the older generation it was a bit of the boiling frog effect where he just always dressed like that and when they were kids they got used to it and it wasn't so creepy when he was 45, whereas the younger generation saw him at 70+ and immediately thought there was something off about him.

I also suppose a caricature of a pedophile in this country from comedy sketches etc. would be informed and defined by the non-stop rumours about one of the most famous people in the country being one?

It must be a generational thing but it’s absolutely nuts isn’t it.

The royals and Thatcher may not have known about the rumours but I suspect their respective security advisors did.
Think The Queen wasn't keen on him one bit . She kept rejecting Thatchers request for him to be knighted. And only accpted the request on Thatchers final Honours list after she resigned.

Prince Charles was extremely close to him

We also didn't see him on TV as much being heralded as the great charity man either.

I imagine if you're a child it doesn't matter what someone looks or behaves like if you see them getting praised by the Prime Minister and Princess Diana or the Beatles/Stones on the news every few months for doing huge things for charity. An impressionable child of the 70's and 80's takes the lead of authority figures and known good people giving him their stamp of approval.

I felt very uncomfortable listening to the lady who he molested when she was 11 during church services. Had to fast forward past that section. How could anyone have not glanced back and caught him in the act just once?

I think the truth is that people must have known but closed their eyes and ears to it because of "don't rock the boat" and the shame and social stigma of that happening in your family.
