If Cancelo was actually an option to play on the left side why did we buy a specialist leftback last month?

Maybe because we wanted him primarily as right back competition for Walker and also to give us extra cover on the left ?

Mate it's because Cancelo's not playing on the left. Zinchenko isn't a converted midfielder anymore, he's just a left back. Every bit of reporting when he signed his deal said he was competing for the starting position, and it's certainly looked that way this preseason. Mendy is still around for at least this season, he's training with the team starting next week, and will play games at some point. And then theres the other guy we signed a month ago, who is also a specialist leftback. We didn't buy Angelino for him not to play at all. Even if Cancelo can play there, he's not going to.

you may be right, we'll see how we do with Zinch/Angelino. If Cancelo is in the mix as well I can see him being picked ahead of them - different assets - natural wide player, quicker, better crosses and able to beat a man on the outside.

I think he wasn't pushing Walker enough

Best of luck to Danilo if this goes through. I thought he got better and better during his time here and was hard done by to not play more than he did last season, especially considering how bad Walker was. But Cancelo is an upgrade, so it’s good for everyone.

Walker also knows he needs to step up now. He could play shit and still be in the team last season. Not anymore. So that competition will bring the best out of both of them.
