Job in Alaska

If you've no ties/commitments and are young enough......then why not?

Another little adventure,I'd be up for it.

Ever seen Southpark? It's just like that, only colder

One can't say that living in South Park would not be exciting. Cold is cold, you deal with it, however the worst part they (some) say is the long, miserably dark nights during the winter months. Yet they are replaced by long, beautiful summer days and nights.

Big fan of S. Park by the way.

I always think when people ask questions like this, is that they already know the answer. They just want some confirmation that it's the correct decisions.

If the move feels right, then it is right. If I were you, I'd do it. If I hate it that much I can always change it.

Blues I have been offered a full time job with the U.S govt up in Alaska (Juneau International Airport to be exact). I need some help. I haven't even ever visited Alaska on holiday, and I don't know anybody from Alaska, so it really would be like moving to another country...again!

Has anyone been to Alaska, and if so what do you reckon to moving there?
Has anyone been to Juneau, Alaska, and the same again?

I realise that this is Off Topic on a Manchester City F.C forum, with a vast majority of users living in the U.K, be it Manchester or elsewhere, however I thought I would give it a shot as this is a huge decision for me to undertake.

I currently live in sunny Florida, and some if not most of you might think it completely bonkers to consider leaving Florida for Alaska. There are many pros and cons to this...

Pros; lowest taxes in the U.S, no state tax (sales tax on purchases), beautiful scenery and outdoors, clean air, higher salaries, high standard of living, long summer days and nights (up to 20 hours or sunlight!).

Cons; remote, cold(although Juneau actually has great climate), high cost of living (rent, petrol, utlities etc.), far away from family and palm trees and in fact anywhere really, Juneau is a very small city with small town feel and only a few luxuries.

There isn't even a road system going into Juneau! One has to have a car ferried there somehow, or be without a car, although being without a car is not advisable.

Anybody still reading? This is a huge decision again, and I am trying to simply get as much help as possible before jumping into this.

Never heard of the place and have pre-conceived probably wrong ideas about Alaska.
It is probably nowhere near the lifestyle of Florida, but why should it be forever.

If it is a fantastic opportunity to progress your career then take it, fantastic opportunities for Governments only come along once in a lifetime.

What do you do for a living, is it specialised?

Good luck with what ever you decide to do.
Juneau is the capitol of Alaska mate. It is nestled between beautiful mountains and on a river/lake. It has all the amenities of a big city, just not on the same level. There is a McDonalds, Dominos, WalMart and Home Depot, yet most the food is ferried in, seafood obviously fresh as can be, and the city has a very small town feel to it.

The job itself is a bit of a piss take to be honest, but a start. I would be a Transportation Security Officer (TSO) working for the T.S.Administration. Basically the name is a glorified 'screener', you know, one of the people who delay your boarding process at the airport, and pat your junk up and down. It is a job, and a very important one, and one that would pay me quite well and provide me with a decent, successful career and life with full benefits and healthcare.

I will expand on my previous expletive.

Alaska is an absolutely magical place. If you are prepared to be away from the big cities and the rat-race, you should have a whale of a time. You're right by the Canadian border, too, with the whole of Yukon Territory and the Rockies at your disposal.

As for 'dark, miserable' winters, which of you posters have ever experienced a proper snowy winter? Juneau's about the same latitude as the Shetlands, so not anywhere near the Arctic Circle. You won't lose the sun in the winter, and as long as there's snow on the ground, it will feel lighter, anyway.

The only thing I'd check out is how windy it can be near the coast. Winter storms can be a bit of a bugger, but as long as you treat them the respect they deserve, then go for it. God knows, I'd jump over a building for the chance.

And yes, I've been to Alaska, but that was mainly Anchorage after flying in to Fairbanks. Some of the most stunning scenery on the planet.

& how close are the nearest pistes for the "shorter" days?

I worked in anchorage and Sitka for a while. Beautiful place and amazing if you like fishing hunting etc, I was only there in the summer months and had the 23 hours of sunlight.

I think you would probably get bored after about 6 months, if you like the lifestyle you have now as its a very quiet place!

Don't leave food near the house/car as bears will be interested!

That looks fucking horrible. I'd stay in Florida with all the old people and just die slowly because that's what you are doing, dieing slowly. Before you know it you will be dead. Dead to yourself and dead to us.

DEAD.
