Job in Alaska

& how close are the nearest pistes for the "shorter" days?[/quote]

Not entirely sure, but I would imagine not far away with all the mountains around. If anyone has been to Big Bear (Lake) in California, then I would presume it would be just like living there. I do miss skiing a great deal. I have a mate from Stockport who lives in Canada now on a mountain, and works as a snowboard instructor...wouldn't go back for all the tea in China.

There are trains of thought which would have me just move back to England, but that's a completely different story, and one which I am not asking to talk about. So far you have all been extraordinarily helpful Blues. Cheers.

i d say it s cold, depressing and full of alcoholics, why not manchester then???? ;)

there is a reason why it was offered to you mate.... it s hell up there, so unless you re getting crazy money. i d pass.

Well being from Manchester, as you allude to, I know cold.

I think you'r in for a bit of a shock mate. I personally would be all over it. Like somebody else has said, you can always go back to Florida when it's time to die.
P.S How the fuck is Alaska a U.S state anyway?

Sorry mate, what do you do for a living now? and how much you on?

You must have not read my New Years Eve thread...been in the F&B/hospitality industry now for about 10 years. Finished university with a B.A in International Relations/Affairs yet have been working in restaurants, bars, a huge international casino, and the like for a decade. My days in the industry are numbered which have led me to looking for jobs from Alaska to China.

Smacks of desperacy, but in reality it is just because I am approaching 30 and need to start a new direction in life and get a proper career going...

Currently waiting tables at a shitty seafood place that I can't stand.

Hi blue,
A friend of mine has a daughter who works for Alaskan Airlines. Fairly sure she did a stint in Juneau, but is now living somewhere in the 'mainland' states, think it might be Portland, Oregon. I do know that she wasn't able to settle in Alaska, hence taking the move when it became available.

Any way of getting a shot term secondment rather than a full blown move? Give you a chance to see if it suits.

Well that is the worry. It is the first 'full time' that has been offered/made available, and I suppose the only thing to do would be to go visit next week or this month sometime and see how I would feel about moving there. It would more than likely be a two year fixed commitment, and the job itself would probably be boring as all hell too. However, just think of the skiing, fishing, hunting, hiking, walking, running, camping and rafting I could explore!

-- Mon Jan 02, 2012 12:57 pm --

No no I am definitely not a kitchen or back of the house man. I hate the industry that's why my days are numbered. Dealing with other people's food and/or drinks is quickly becoming a thing of the past for me. I want nothing more to do with the industry, that's all pal.
