As most fans, Joe Hart will be modern Manchester City's foremost great. No doubt about it.
I understand you getting upset about fellow supporters making up their minds quickly. I also understand how it upsets you when someone says that Joe Hart is not good enough.
But I think I can give you my perspective about those things.
The moment Pep Guardiola was appointed, I as a City fan, realised that hart's place was under threat. As any City fan, I had avidly read up on the way Pep understands the game and how his teams play. I quickly saw that Hart will have to improve his distribution and how he uses his feet. As the season closed to an end, I saw Hart have some great performances and some average ones. I thanked him when he made that crucial save vs PSG. I praised him when he kept us in the game vs Real Madrid in the first leg. I also saw him let in some poor goals vs Southampton and Swansea. All during that period, I watched Joe to see if there was some improvement in his basic distribution and footwork. I saw none. It was the same. I don't know when it happened, but I wasn't in the least bit surprised at the news that City were searching for a new keeper. Somehow, I had already made up my mind that Joe was not going to start for City under Pep. You need to know that I did feel bad that Joe will have to make way. But I had felt bad about that fact way before his exit came to the attention of the general public. I had concluded my mourning long before the funeral, you see.
I see people feeling indignant about Joe not being given a year or so to improve his distribution. They think Joe will learn all those things under Pep's coaching.First of all, basic technique is not easily coachable to a guy who is almost 30. That is a well understood in the coaching world. Joe may undergo all the coaching sessions in the world, but his ability to pass will improve very marginally. It is more feasible to get a goalkeeper who has either already that skill set or to buy a young, mouldable player. Secondly, I think these people do not understand the dynamics of the dressing room and do not understand how the media work. Keeping Joe Hart, a proud and influential figure in the dressing room, as the Number 2 is unhealthy for the team dynamics. Keeping an English fan favourite is UNFAIR to the goalkeeper who is going to start in his place. The media will scrutinise every little detail about this already awkward situation. Furthermore, Pep Guardiola has come to Manchester City to prove his managerial worth to the world. He will NOT take any prisoners in his quest. Why should he? Isn't it fair that a manager who will most likely face the sack for his team's underperformance be given the freedom to shape the team he wants to take forward?
In all of this, not once have I doubted Joe Hart's quality as a goalkeeper. I only doubt his suitability to the new system we shall be playing under. There's a huge distinction.
