Received the following email from someone yesterday, asking if anyone could shed any light on what has happened to Joe Hayes. According to Wikipedia he passed away in 1999, but I haven't been able to find anything to corroborate this. Any help much appreciated.
Sorry to contact you out of the blue like this, but I thought you might be able to shed some light on a rather strange encounter I had earlier today.
I was walking down Eltham High Street in South East London when an old bloke came up to me, smartly dressed, but fallen on hard times. He was asking directions to a Salvation Army hostel and, to cut a long story short, I ended up giving him £5 to get him there by train. But the weird thing was, he said he was Joe Hayes.
He described in some detail the 1950s cup finals, and said he had played for England. Wikipedia says that Joe Hayes died in 1999, and doesn't mention an England caps. But equally, I can't find any obituaries for Joe Hayes, or reports of a funeral.
Is it at all possible he's still alive, and walking the streets of London, destitute? Or have I been conned by someone with a good knowledge of Man City history? I'd be interested in your views. By the way, I'm a Charlton season ticket holder with only a vague recollection of when we used to be in the same league as City...
