Joe Mercer OBE

Thank you for this forum..I believe that Joe and Malcolm were one of the great pairs in football..like Clough and Taylor..having been brought up in Chorlton, Joe lived close by..even busby..City were the last team to win the title with 11 English players..thank you Joe and Malcolm..many happy days. Pep is great, but what those guys did was immense, maybe more so given the circumstances.

Him and Don Revie were assisting David Coleman during the England v Brazil game for the BBC but it was Revie that was all flat vowels and full on literal pronunciations..."Pelly" !
Mercer did analysis for the 1966 World Cup and was effusive about the Argentinan defender Antonio Rattin.

Rattin was sent off for 'violence of the tongue' in the QF against England by the German referee, Rudolfe Kreitlein. The referee didn't speak a word of Spanish but interpreted the lip movements.

I thought that Joe would have loved to have signed Rattin.
